Any ovarian cyst people about?

After two years of random flaring pains, I took myself off to the doctors who reckoned ovarian cyst(s)

Going back tonight to get the results from two sets of ultrsounds, and have a blood test on Thursday for what I'm assuming is a procedural check for cancerous cells etc...

Just wondered if I could have a little bit of hand holding, and anyone elses experiences please?

They definitely do seem to recur don't they? I'm just curious to know whether our symptoms are being caused by the cysts themselves or if the cysts are being picked up only because we have these symptoms. Well I guess those of you who've had cysts removed can say for certain, but in my case it all seems very random.

orangeflutie · 03/08/2012 13:52

It is a bit odd. I was told that the first one I had removed had come back and that this is more likely apparently if the cyst is just aspirated and the outer wall isn't removed. Anyway the last cyst was removed in June last year and I was told that the whole thing had been removed, outer wall and all.

I'm presuming the latest cyst is a new one Confused and am hoping that when the left ovary is removed I won't get any more as so far they've all been on the left!

Also interesting what you say about symptoms as my first one was only spotted during an exploratory laparoscopy, during which it was also discovered I had endometriosis. Occasionally I had pain during sex but other than that no symptoms. This one and the last I've felt a definite burning pain before diagnosis which I now know relates to cysts.

Well I had my scan yesterday, finally, but I had one of those annoying ultrasound people who won't tell you anything. I managed to get out of her that there was something that might be considered a cyst 'depending on what the doctors make of the measurements' and that she couldn't see anything 'concerning'. What should I make of that? Now have to wait to see the GP again for results.

orangeflutie · 12/08/2012 14:44

Oh that is annoying that the sonographer didn't tell you anything. I suspect it may be a cyst but she doesn't want to commit herself for some reason. The scan will be looked at again by the doctors and they should be able to tell you the results. It does mean you will have to wait to find out via the GP but it shouldn't be long. My doctor actually phoned me the day after the scan and I was really surprised it was so quick.

Hope you find out in the next couple of days x

prettysunset · 12/08/2012 18:33

The scan will not be looked at by a Doctor orangeflutie. Sonographers are independant practitioners who scan and write the reports which are sent back to the Doctor who then feeds back the results to the patient. Ultrasound images are nonsence to most non-ultrasound trained Radioraphers nevermind Doctors! Doctors seldom see the images (unless out of interest on the Hospital pacs system) The reason why many Sonographers are reluctant to give you your results is because the scan room is neither the time nor the place to give potentialy bad news and while some patients shrug off news of a cyst others will be anxious and full of questions that a busy scanning session does not have the time to accomodate.

orangeflutie · 12/08/2012 19:56

Sorry I didn't mean to give wrong information and cause any confusion, I meant that Bashful Blue will find out results via her GP who will have a report.

Regarding the latter part of your post andyflo it does seem to depend upon the individual sonographer as to how much information he/she will give. I've been extremely lucky in that every time I've been scanned the sonographers have been very informative.

Hey everyone, just a little update from me

I've been for my gynae appointment, and a more miserable unfeeling man I've yet to meet...After lots of questions, and a bit of prodding I left with the feeling that clearly I was making that level of pain up and that as I didn't match up with his list of symptoms etc then it wasn't his problem.

Forward on a couple of weeks, and I go to get another scan (by gynaes referral) and this is the weird bit...

I no longer have a cyst on my right ovary, but there is now a little one on my left. This scan was at a different part of my cycle than the last two lots I've had so maybe that's the difference?

It makes no sense, and I'm back to square one. It's most frustrating as the week before I went to see the gynae bod, I had the worst lot of pain I've ever had. To the point of being up every hour on the hour at night with it despite the painkillers I'd taken.

Sorry for the long ramble, but felt good getting it all out there!

You poor soul! Cysts can come and go- I have recurrent cysts and know when I've got one and when it's resolved again. Very frustrating for you getting no answers.

mrsmusic2 · 16/08/2012 17:33

I've had my ultrasound too. Good news, she couldn't see anything at all so I'm mighty relieved!

delphinedownunder · 23/08/2012 12:25

A little date from me. I am having an abdominal hysterectomy next week because of the borderline malignancy of the cyst. My remaining ovary is staying and will be closely monitored. A side effect of this state of affairs is that the incessant bleeding caused by the cyst has resulted in my developing a heart murder which will also need watching. And when I first went to the gp she said there was nothing wrong with me! I had to pursue a private scan and a private appointment with the consultant to get a diagnosis.

delphinedownunder · 23/08/2012 12:26

I mean heart murmer. Flipping iPad .

Bashfulblue · 24/08/2012 16:26

Blimey Delphine, what a nightmare! How did the bleeding cause a heart murmer? I can't believe the GP said there was nothing wrong with you.

I've seen my GP now and I do have cysts on both sides (which explains why I have pain on both sides I guess..). Biggest one is 4cm but she said she didn't see anything to worry about, and we kind of agreed that I'll live with the pain for now. I'm glad I had it checked out and I think in my case it's probably the Mirena coil that's causing the recurrent cysts - like SomethingO I think mine will probably continue to come and go. Being a woman is not easy is it?

Good news for you Mrsmusic - lovely when that happens!

delphinedownunder · 25/08/2012 01:26

I don,t know exactly how the murmer and the bleeding are linked, but I have been told this by my new GP and the consultant. Something like my body is craving extra iron and so is working harder to achieve this, putting added strain on the heart valves. Apparently there is a good chance that things will settle down once the anaemia is sorted. I am taking meds and there is talk of a transfusion next week.

delphinedownunder · 25/08/2012 01:27

And I think the lesson is to not take no for an answer if you feel that something is not right.

orangeflutie · 19/09/2012 16:37

Hi everyone

Quick update from me. I will be going into hospital tomorrow mid morning for surgery. I will be having a laparoscopy to remove my ovarian cyst and left ovary. Will be glad to get it over with now as have been getting quite a lot of pain at night.

I'm hoping it won't take me too long to recover as am having to take unpaid time off work, but what can you do?

Will let you know how I get on.

Hope you're all ok.

littleSpud · 23/07/2014 12:36

Sorry to re instate old thread but was searching for info and found this

I have a suspected ovarian cyst/s as well, had lower abdominal pain for a few weeks now. But got really bad last weekend and I ended up at a and e. I wasn't scanned but the doc says it's very likely an ovarian cyst and I've been referred for a scan

I suffer from awful anxiety though and I'm worrying. My doctor says it's "unlikely" to be anything sinister as I'm only 34 and she said my abdomen etc all felt normal when she examined me. but I'm still panicking. (Glad found this thread though as it's mostly re assuring. Smile )

So if anyone's got anything to add I would be grateful x

rach0303 · 03/08/2015 14:59

Hi I've been for a ultrasound scan today , I was told after the scan that I have 2 small cysts on my left ovary , don't know what that means but I've got to wait a week to see a doctor to get my results explained to me . I was sent for a ultrasound after 4 months of no period and numerous blood tests . Has anyone else experienced this or no more about it than me ? And can you still conceive if you have 2 small cysts on your left ovary ?

Shoegal0305 · 03/08/2015 19:02

I was diagnosed with a 4cm cyst on my left ovary last November. I too suffer severe health anxiety. Terrified of having a general anaesthetic (this scares me more than the cyst!). I'm 43 and have a son so the fertility aspect doesn't worry me my childbearing years are done. But I totally understand your fears. I've been having 3 monthly scans and bloods. So far cyst has been a functional clear filled cyst. Also got diagnosed with a fibroid at last scan but got a letter this morning from my consultant to say all is ok? But health anxiety is a bastard and of course I still worry like mad. Xx

GoooRooo · 03/08/2015 19:04

This a very old thread so many of the original posters may not be around rach and shoegal.

rach I had cysts on my ovaries and had them removed by keyhole surgery. It took me a long time to conceive but I now have a three year old boy and I am pregnant again. The docs were never sure if they were affecting my fertility or not but said that plenty of women do conceive with ovarian cysts.
