Pain and inflammation in forearm after Cannula

Hello there,

I was wondering if anyone can shed any light on what is going on with my bloody arm, it's driving me mad!!!

I was in hospital as a day patient on friday. I was having a procedure where they put me to sleep and I had a cannula inserted in my hand. This is where they gave me the aneasthetic (did I spell that correctly) and when I came round I was hooked up to a drip via the same cannula.

Anyway.....on the saturday I woke up with quite a tender forearm and following the trail of the vein that the cannula had been inserted into was a very red mark running to about half way down my forearm. It was painful to touch so I called the ward I was on and explained this to a nurse who said it didn't sound unusual and I was to take my pain meds and if it hadn't cleared up by monday go see my GP. Monday comes and it feels 10x worse but the redness has gone, the pain is now past my elbow and it is uncomfortable to touch. I've been to see my GP but she said to give it another few days and if I'm still in pain with it call her and she'll write a prescription for anti-bots.

Should I be worried about this cos I've just checked my arm againa nd it is bright red again (following the vein) past my elbow into my upper arm now. I keep getting a funny tingly sensation in my fingers too.......

Anyone had any experience of anything like this?

TIA x

Draw a line in biro around the red area (so you can see if it's spreading) and get it looked at again today - either back to GP or A&E. Don't be tempted to put it off/see how it goes.

Sounds like phlebitis. Agree mark the area with a pen and back to gp for antibiotics.

To me this sounds like a visit to A and E. my uncle had similar and needed IV antibiotics.

FirstUpBestDressed · 09/07/2012 22:08

A and e.could be cellulitis which would need iv antibiotics :(
