Stringy poo in 18 week old baby - don't read if you are eating!!!!!!

Sorry if TMI. My ds is 18 weeks and exclusively bf. I have just changed his nappy which was explosive (not that unusal, but it doesn't explode every time!!) but it smells really rancid - a bit like stewed rhubarb and there are green stringy bits in it.
I phoned my HV who said just to keep an eye on it and contact her again if it gets any worse which is fair enough.
I have had a dodgy tummy for the last couple of days.
Please tell me that I don't need to worry about it at the mo and suggest what I should be on the look out for.

mb is it all green or just the stringy bits

starlover · 01/03/2006 14:08

think pretty much anything is normal in baby poo! especially when they're breastfed it would seem.

am sure ds had nappies like that when he was little. it could just be excess mucus if he has been a bit snotty?

mawbroon · 01/03/2006 14:08

Just the stringy bits MG. The other stuff is yellow.

baby poo changes all the time. Just watch out for your baby going off its feed and make sure he, wee's poohs regularly. If its more often or not as often and he seems upset, then get him checked out!!

It does look a bit mucusy (is that a word!!) Starlover and he has a bit of a snottery nose. I had to wipe it off my boob when I finished feeding him!

starlover this is true as I was told because they cant get it up themselves it can come out in their poo

MrsBadger · 01/03/2006 14:11

The rhubarb smell can be because the food is whizzing through his lower intestine so fast that it's still acidic from his stomach when it's poo'd out (TMI I know).

And yes, snot - they can't cough so swallow it all.

mummygow · 01/03/2006 14:11

just asked about colour mb as ds's was quite dark green this morning - but def think it could be what starlover says

mawbroon · 01/03/2006 14:13

Yes, the mucus thing makes sense. Poor mite will be all confused as I had to bath him as the poo was everywhere! He'll be thinking it's bedtime....

Maybe my dodgy tummy is morning sickness ShockOnly kidding

Thanks ladies. I'm not nearly so worried now. DS has gone down no bother for his nap. I'm away to wrestle with the cover of his bouncy chair as it was directly in the line of fire and needs a wash.
