Question about double vision (and laser eye surgery) - are any doctors/opticians here?

When I was in primary school I was diagnosed with double vision - I think the term used was diplopia and it was a muscle problem. I used to go to the hospital for tests and I had a prism in my glasses. I still get double vision if I'm tired or not concentrating but normally can manage it ok.

However, recently either it is getting worse or I am noticing it more. I was told it is possible to do exercises for the eye to improve the muscle strength. Should I see my GP about this, or go to the opticians? I am also considering having laser eye surgery - have any fellow double-visioners had this? I am able to wear contacts and I don't believe I have a prism any more.

Thanks in advance for any advice you can give me.

I had laser eye surgery last year and they do a huge range of tests that are so far and beyond what your optician does it takes several hours. Then you have several pre-op consultations.

All I can say is give it a go and get an appointment but be prepared for it to be much more costly than the adverts suggest on TV if you have a complex problem.

Thank you MoreBeta - I had heard that the consultations were very thorough, so I think I will have one. I'm budgeting for around £5000 as I would definitely be wary about using the places with those ultra cheap adverts! I think I will use Ultralase. If you don't mind me asking, are you glad you had the surgery?

I used Optegra and it cost £4000 but nothing as complex as your eyes. I just have very thin corneas so cheaper standard procedures were not open to me.

Yes very glad I had the procedure. I had short sight for years and then had to wear varifocals and kept falling over things. I didnt look nice with glasses on either.

I am very happy but my eyes are a bit dry sometimes and it hurt a lot for abouta week - but not during the procedure. You need to plan to take a week off work and not drive for quite a few weeks.
