Exposed to vomiting virus at work - chances of actually getting it?

AngryFeet · 05/07/2012 14:46

A complete wanker at my work decided to come in even though they were still suffering from a vomiting bug which others in the building are falling like flies with. I dont tend to work in that building so wouldn't have been exposed except for today. We had a 30 min meeting - sitting fairly close - before I was told they had been and still were ill.

Chances of me catching this and how long does it take to rear it's ugly head? I have two kids and we are supposed to be staying with friends this weekend.

So bloody cross - what an idiot!

These things are more often spread by touch - so sitting close is not that likely to have got the germs onto you. The risk would be if you shook his hand, then your hand went onto your face, or onto the end of a biro you chewed, that kind of thing.

I was sitting at someones feet whilst they sat on the loo with active D & V and I haven't caught it.
Doesn't mean I won't next time though. I think it's pure luck.

AngryFeet · 05/07/2012 19:25

Thanks. Fingers crossed then!

I was using her PC so touching the mouse and keyboard that she had been using but went and scrubbed my hands afterwards!

AngryFeet · 05/07/2012 22:17

Ah feck Sad

Get your windows open more than usual in your office, use lots of anti bac gel and put some in your office toilets so others might use it. Wipe down shared telephones if you can and your keyboard.

I used to get lots of this going around work when I worked in schools but I rarely taught anything myself. My children would hate me for having windows open all the time but less of them caught bugs! I swear by anti bac gel too.

alphabite · 06/07/2012 02:25

rarely caught anything myself not taught!

LadyWidmerpool · 06/07/2012 04:26

I had it and neither my husband nor my breastfed daughter caught it from me so fingers crossed.

JannySlims · 06/07/2012 10:49

I had it a couple of weeks ago, not full D&V, just the D. Got it from my daughter but my husband managed to not get it.

It lasted a couple of days, lots of urgent "running", then just wiped out for another couple of days.

GoingToBedfordshire · 06/07/2012 18:56

Feel for you OP. Was at walk in minor injuries dept this morning with my Dd (5) to have a splinter removed from her foot. A woman walked in ignoring the massive signs telling people not to enter with sickness only to tell the receptionist she had terrible sickness and diahorrea. Dd declared during tea 'my tummy feels funny' and left half her dinner. Just waiting and seeing what develops.

Sincerely hope you are fine and your plans can go ahead.

Amazed at some people's selfishness.

chipstick10 · 06/07/2012 19:17

Its quite bizzare. Dh had it thur, i got it sat along with ds1 and ds2. On sat my sister and her kids were over and inlaws also. Noone got it. DD came home on monday and got it last night.

toffeefee · 06/07/2012 20:16

Goingtobedfordshire - I wouldn't think that it would come on that quickly if your daughter had caught it from that lady in the walk in centre. It would normally take at least 24 hours to come out. More likely to have caught it from school.

NorkyButNice · 06/07/2012 21:13

I've got it :-(

I wOnder if it's passable via MN...

GoingToBedfordshire · 06/07/2012 21:18

Toffeefee - my rational mind knows you are right, but I do get overly anxious about sick! This woman wasn't actually sick in the waiting room, she was a few metres away from us and we washed our hands once we got to nurse's room 20 minutes later. So, hopefully chances of catching it from her are low (right?!)

It's more of a worry as it's one of my other dd's 4th bday on Sun and we have theme park tickets. It's the not knowing that is so hard - if anyone is actually ill, I can cope ok.

Angryfeet - sorry for highjack, how are you feeling?

Sorry to hear others have suffered, it is grim :(

GoingToBedfordshire · 06/07/2012 21:20

Norky - you poor thing. Do not suggest that though, am irrational enough about it already...

Do hope you are over it soon, take care

chipstick10 · 06/07/2012 21:39

Re my post tho how long does it linger in the air or on objects. Dh brought it home last thu and dd got it last night.

GoingToBedfordshire · 06/07/2012 22:22

According to Wiki the virus can survive 12 hours on hard surfaces, 12 days on fabrics.

So sorry it's dragging out for your family, it's absolutely rotten.

submarine · 06/07/2012 22:24

hello, I think you should be ok, the antibacterial gel does zilch to protect you from virus's , you need an antiviral gel, I but mine online ( Im also emmetophobic!)

It can live on surfaces for 2 weeks, bleach as much as you can, its the only thing sure to kill it!

oiwheresthecoffee · 06/07/2012 22:28

I got it once from standing next to someone for five minutes. They thought they were no longer contagious. Seems they were wrong.

AngryFeet · 06/07/2012 22:35

Still ok 36 hours later. Am pretty cross with my colleague still. She is the boss there and it is a bloody soft play centre Angry.

OP posts:
GoingToBedfordshire · 06/07/2012 22:47

Glad to hear you've not been struck down - hopefully all will be well for your weekend plans.

Not feeling so irrational now though about my dislike of soft play centres for fear of catching bugs!

Yup, I would be fuming if in your shoes, v irresponsible of your colleague. I was aghast at the patient in my waiting room who just disregarded the signs about staying away if vomiting. Think some people just don't believe the advice applies to them.

Keep well people, off to bed with everything crossed for a sickness free weekend.

amillionyears · 07/07/2012 08:07

Deep cleaning is what they can use for it,especially in childrens areas. And even then Ive known it have to be done repeatedly.

chipstick10 · 07/07/2012 08:41

Point i am making is it doesnt seem very vilerelant. We as a family got it stretched out over a week and yet visitors to the house and even my sons gf who ate here didnt get it.
