Hi.
I laways suffer with very dry and cracked skin on my hands in the winter months. Sometimes they look like someone had made tiny razor slashes all over them, it's very painful .This year it's worse and really wired. The top of three of my fingers to the left of each nail has just split. It's very deep and i scream when they touch anything it's that painful. It loos like i've cut muself very deeply.
Any ideas what it could be?
I know i need to go to the Docs really!

Yes, i use the neutrogena but they still split.
The thing is, it really does look like i've cut them, it's like they errupt from the inside out! Very strange.

Oh it's agony isn't it Angeliz. I have this atm and started a thread on it called cracked fingers ouch ouch ouch! I would link it for you but the archives are down. There were some good suggestions on there which I've yet to get the chance to investigate.

Angeliz · 01/03/2006 10:15

Oh thanks spidermam, will look at thatSmile

I get these a lot, and so does my mum - they're incredibly painful. I'm taking Omega 3, 6 and 9 capsules to try to help (although I'm constantly forgetting to take them) and I find that the only thing that helps to protect them is the Germolene New Skin - it's a bit like nail varnish, that you put over cuts. Helps them to heal. And keep using loads of hand cream, plus gloves (rubber for washing up, and warm ones when outside). Good luck - if you find a cure, please let me know!

Sherbert37 · 01/03/2006 10:18

My thumbs do this every so often and it is very painful. I use the fisherman's hand cream and always wear rubber gloves to wash up etc and gloves outside but still no solution. Hadn't really thought of going to the doctors as thought it was just one of those things. I'll be interested to know how you get on.

JackieNo · 01/03/2006 10:18

I'll have to look at the archives too, when it's all up and running againSmile

meysey · 01/03/2006 13:30

I get this too and it is agony. avoiding water and all household chores helps, but that's not going to happen very often!!

a homeopath has given me some pills and recommended graphites cream. I'll let you know how I get on. I'd be interested in hearing anyone else's success stories

spidermama · 01/03/2006 18:14

Hmmmm. I still can't get into the archives. My fingers are so sore even typing hurts now.

Orinoco · 01/03/2006 22:17

I've been smothering my hands in vaseline these last few days, after mine started again.

Angua · 01/03/2006 22:17

Hi

BadHair · 01/03/2006 22:35

Mine do it too. I get splits all over hands, especially fingertips and knuckles. Don't know what the medical reason is other than straightforward chapping, but it's really painful when it's around the nerve endings on the fingers.
Best handcream is l'occitane - fearfully expensive at about £13 a tube, but it really does the trick. Alternative is Asda dry skin cream in a tub, which is somewhat cheaper. It's almost, but not quite, as good.

jalopy · 02/03/2006 08:12

My fingers crack and my hands are always really dry at this time of the year. Use loads of thick hand cream several times a day.
Wear gloves when washing up. Detergents can really worsen the situation. The skin on my hands get better when winter ends.

CoveredInBees · 02/03/2006 08:13

yes, get to the doctor
my sister has this problem, she takes aloe vera and also uses tea tree oil or Bio oil

Radley · 02/03/2006 08:16

You may be able to get this from a local pharmacy, but it is a miracle stick, it cures allsorts, i used to suffer badly chaffed legs from the cold and my knuckles and fingertips used to split constantly, dads fingertips and knuckles used to feel the same.

I always have one in the medicine cabinet.

When you put it on you feel instant relief and at the price you should give it a go

I get this too as well as really bad dermatitis on my hands. Do you avoid soap which can dry the skin out and cause the cracking? You can use aqueous cream to wash your hands (from a pharmacy) - the doctor told me it was just as effective for getting germs off (I am a bit anally-retentive about germs). Then I cover the cuts with cream - usually Diprobase, from the doc - and plasters until they are partly healed. Tea tree oil sometimes helps too.

Hope they're better soon.

spidermama · 02/03/2006 21:08

I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that I live in a limey hard water area.

Anyway, here's the other \link{http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk?topicid=138&threadid=149461&stamp=060223233457\thread on the subject} with a couple of useful leads.

Orinoco · 03/03/2006 21:13
