herpes

I am due in just over a month but am not sure what type of birth is best for me. I have had herpes for a number of years and although symptomless, know that I have had outbreaks from time to time. It appears that current NHS thinking is that the risks of a cesarian outweigh the risks of my baby catching herpes from me. However, I am very worried about passing onto my baby the virus as it can be very serious. Does anyone have or had similar experiences?

I have changed my name for this. About 6 years ago, I had a 'scare' and went to get it checked out. They did swabs but not bloods, and, although the swabs came back negative, they were sure that it was herpes (don't quite understand that myself). I was given tablets and have not since had any other problems. Whilst pregnant, I was worried about it (even though it hadn't been confirmed officially) and spent a lot of time reading about it. I think that you are right about the current thinking on caesarians. When I was pregnant, I told the MW about the situation (she thought I was slightly crazy, but that is a different story). I would speak to your midwife about your worries - I think that if you had symptoms from around 30 weeks onwards, then it would probably be suggested that a caesarian should be done when you do go into labour. Although I am no expert. Remember though, people have elective caesarians all of the time - if this seems the right choice for you then find out a bit more about it. I am sorry that you have this situation to deal with as well as the usual stresses and worries about pregnancy and childbirth. I hope that you feel that your midwife is approachable - if so, explain your worries to her. Have you chatted to DP/DH about your concerns?

Hi Sminty, I think the rule is that if you already carry the virus when you become pregnant, then your baby has antibodies, and you should be fine. The danger is if you have a first outbreak before going into labour. Ask your midwives, and ask them to double check with the obstetrician overseeing your notes if you are doubtful. Anyway, if you have no outbreak in labour, there's no risk....stay off the chocolate and Brazil nuts!!!
And GOOD LUCK.

Blu is right - the first onset herpes when pregnant is most dangerous.

Sminty: you will probably get lots of support if you post this under the Pregnancy topic, too, where the MN midwife posters might see it! You won't be alone with this one...not by a long chalk!
