Food that's kind to stomachs that have been violently ill?

DS1 still being sick - he's managed toast and rice cakes today, but was horribly sick after a tiny bit of plain yoghurt this evening (I know, possibly not the right thing, but he was desperate for it and wouldn't eat any more toast).

He's had gastroenteritis since Thursday (bad nappies), but only been sick since Friday evening, since when he's barely eaten anything. He didn't have much spare flesh on him to start with and he looks painfully thin now.

He's seen the dr twice so far and we'll take him again tomorrow, but I just wondered if anyone had any suggestions for food that's good for toddlers to eat after they've been so unwell?

Or, more importantly, what to avoid to ensure the sick fountains he's been producing recently don't occur again!

Once they're over 3 (and I assume yours isn't because of nappies) once they come off the BRAT thing probiotic drinks or yoghurts are recommended by our dietician to get gut flora up again. Just thought useful for reference!

Ah, meant to say - he's 23 months on Friday.

Oh poor thing. Sad

Hope he starts to improve soon.

I'd give the probiotics now. 23 months is fine for powder form from health shop.

Also - expressed breastmilk.

Eldest always craves plain pasta when been ill.

PeachyClair · 01/03/2006 21:42

Try the things they suggest for morning sickness- cucumber, melon, that sort of thing. And of course, home made chicken soup, just like the good Jewish women do (and wasn't it proven that proper chicken soup had anti viral qualities sometime back?)

bobbybobbobbingalong · 03/03/2006 03:34

How is he now?

meggmoo · 03/03/2006 14:13

HM, how is your DS1? Is he managing to eat anything yet?

hunkermunker · 05/03/2006 23:03

He's heaps better - back to his normal self! Thank goodness Grin

Cannot believe how ill he was and how quickly he bounced back - are toddlers made of rubber?!

Thanks again for all the advice and for asking after him - lovely feeling to think there are people thinking about your poorly child and wishing them better Smile

As for eating - he keeps bellowing "More eats!" so I think he's got his appetite back...!

yes, all toddlers are made of rubber. With fingernails of crayon. Hair made of brambles. Teeth made of barbed wire.

Dont mess with a toddler Grin

How are you HM.

hunkermunker · 05/03/2006 23:09

PMSL at description of a toddler - that's brilliant!

I'm OK...ish. Going to see if I can take both boys out by myself tomorrow (easier said than done with a single pushchair and a toddler who doesn't walk far!). Or do some more sobbing. But am going to aim for the former! DS2 has a horrible cough that's keeping him awake at night and making him wake up every couple of hours and want to feed. Going to go to bed now.

Thanks for asking, QV - will sort out coming to see you soon too - maybe next week?

Yes, next week fine. How about tomorrow Grin

Seriously............. Tuesday? Grin

I always found that it was the organising getting out of the house that was the most complicated. Once i was actually out it wasnt so bad.
