Chickenpox so Mild it went unnoticed

So about 10 days ago DS now 2yo sprouted some (about 6) tiny pin prick spots on one of this legs, no itching, no decrease in appetite, felt warm to touch, but no fever, VERY irritable and prone to crying at the slightest (quite unlike his normal smiley self). Last night there was a flat spot on his tummy and a pin prick pimple on his cheek, which disappeared in the morning.
Took him to the GP and was told its a mild case of CP and I should just ignore it. She was sure its CP but thought it to be mild because the spots were tiny and had already crusted over. No fever but a blocked nose added to her suspicion.

Has anyone experienced this? CP so mild, so think its a rash/ insect bite. I have had critical illness in the house of visiting in-laws and thus managed not to be as over anxious as I can/tend to be about everything/ anything to do with DS.

As a kid, CPgave me 200+ spots and my brother 9!
We are not sure if DS has had it or not. Everyone else got it a few years ago in his class. He got a few spots and was a bit off colour for a few days, a bit like a cold or vius. It did the rounds again a few weeks ago and he didn't get it at all so maybe the first one was CP. Both times he has been in close contact with kids with CP.

My DS had some blistery spots on his bottom but nowhere else and no other symptoms. I thought it could be hand foot and mouth as he had had that before and apparently you can get that again, but the doctor said that it was more likely to be CP as there were no spots in his mouth or on hands or feet. So it is on his record that he has had CP. I remain unconvinced, and still wary as I have heard of people having mild doses and then getting it again.

Dd1 had about three spots on her body, and a few more on her scalp that I only saw because I was looking for them. She was very irritable though, and got expelled from her toddler swimming class for refusing to get out of the pool, she was 3 ffs, a few days before the spots arrived.

Three weeks later, dd2 was covered from top to toe. She was only 6 months old, and really suffered. My GP said that in her experience, which is not backed up by evidence, the first child in a family often gets chicken pox mildly, and siblings that catch it off them weeks later are covered. She said this is a trend that she has personally noticed over the years, rather than a known thing, and isn't guaranteed to happen.

Ds1 got CP a week before my due date with dd. Normal amount of spots and not too ill. Dh got them the week after dd was born. Again normal amount of spots and luckily for an adult not ill at all. Dd developed 3 spots on her shoulder about 2 weeks after that. They were so small that even under a magnifying glass the gp couldn't be certain. He marked on her notes that she had CP because of recent family history. I however remained unconvinced.

Fast forward 7 years and dd got shingles which you can't have without having chicken pox first so it seems the gp was right after all.

DD2 only had a few spots which I mightn't have noticed if DD1 hadn't had a really bad dose a couple of weeks before

Housewifefromheaven · 03/07/2012 10:12

Yy ds just a cold really and a few spots. Dd 12 was really ill. Covered. It is sometimes worse apparently if you catch it from a sibling.

bigkidsdidit · 03/07/2012 10:14

Oh!

My toddler has a few spots on his face and tum, about 10 total,, not blistery. He is a bit grumpy, sleeping loads, off his food, but no fever. Could it be CP?

I thought the spots and the grump were unconnected.

TheOneWithTheHair · 03/07/2012 10:19

It could be bigkidsdidit. No harm in taking him to get checked out. I would be unsurprised to find the spots and the grump are connected.

DeWe · 03/07/2012 11:15

The children I've known who have had chickenpox that mildly have nearly all had it again. So it either wasn't chicken pox, or if it was then it wasn't bad enough to give them immunity.

My db always claimed that he'd had measles because he'd had one spot when a measles epidemic happened. He didn't get measles again, but that's probably because dm wangled the MMR for him when it first came in, although he was over age.

MaMattoo · 03/07/2012 14:27

Thanks! The Gp was certain it's CP. if e gets again then we shall deal with it :-/

He has been very grumpy but I wrote it off as being two, changes in nursery and finally being put to sleep in a separate room. I have been at hospital or two weeks with a very ill FIL and that might have contributed too. I was looking for fever, itching, lack of appetite etc. none of which happened.

If this is CP and it's this mild in the young ones then I am glad I did not go down the vaccination route.

Yes, I've a cp three times and I'm sure it's because I had a mild dose the first couple of times.

SnoopyKnine · 03/07/2012 17:03

same as theonewithhair 3 year old DD got chicken pox and breastfeeding 8month old DS who got two spots diagnosed as mild cp.

Roll on 16 years later and he got shingles (during GCSE great timing). Dr said it was common for children to have shingles if they had a mild case of cp as immune response not strong enough.

controlpantsandgladrags · 03/07/2012 19:59

Yes. Dd's first experience of cp was a collection of about 10 spots on her leg. She then got it again about 6 months later really badly.

Bunbaker · 03/07/2012 20:06

DD had a mild bout of chicken pox when she was 4. She got it well and truly when she was 9.
