Anyone had one?

DD's consultant (she's a brittle asthmatic) doesn't like the sound of her cough or the fact that this chest infection won't go or the fact that steroids are no longer working for her and wants to do one of these. I know she is going to Google the procedure and scare her self half stupid so I'd like to get a bit of first hand info if I can.

Please help?

I've had one, can she be put to sleep for it?
I didn't find it an easy procedure to be honest, and can't imagine a child going through it awake.

Thank you. She's 22 but she's a big wuss when it comes to hospitals and medical procedures, I've suggested to her she might need to ask about being sedated. Did you get results the same day? I think she's worried about what they are looking for, she's already had x-rays, a CT scan and some other tests but is continuing to get worse.

Ah bless :) they sedate you for it anyway, and a lot of people don't remember, I managed to stay wide awake through mine, vomit bile and then inhale it, but I think I was just unlucky.

They spray the back of your throat with local anaesthetic do you font feel it going down, very odd sensation but only takes about 20 mins.
They can see straight away on the screen what they're looking for, but if biopsy's are taken they take about 10 days.
I think if she can face it at least it would hopefully give some answers.
Although mine was inconclusive to I had to have surgery to take bigger biopsy's.

Sorry typing on my phone!

Thank you Red, I think I'll go with her as she won't be able to drive if she's been sedated. I won't mention anything about vomiting as she is an emetophobe. Results on the day would be fantastic.

Hope it all goes ok

I've had two and been lightly sedated for both. Much more pleasant that way, although agreed that the local anaesthetic spray is grim!

Have they managed to culture anything from her sputum? Could be that she's been on the wrong antibiotics so far.

hellhasnofurylikeahungrywoman · 02/07/2012 18:32

She's been on a variety of antibiotics for about 18 months to 2 years now as a prophylactic but every time she seems to shift the infection it comes back again. I can't remember of she's had a sputum test, I'll ask her when she gets in tonight as it would be worth doing if she hasn't had one.
