Can a non-obstetric ultrasound be used to check for baby's heartbeat etc?

I'm having abdo and pelvic ultrasounds this week because of heavy, painful periods and additional abdo pain. This has been booked via the x-ray department at the hospital, not OB-GYN as far as I can tell. Since booking the appointment, I've had my BFP and think I'm 6 to 7 weeks pregnant. Has anyone got any experience of a non-obstetric ultrasound giving sight of a fetus and its heartbeat? Or are they likely to ignore all that and stick to the intended purpose of the scans? I'm desperate to get a glimpse and know my pregnancy is viable.

Thanks

They should do a vaginal ultrasound scan. A fetal heart should be seen once you are seven weeks. Before that it may not be visible on scan.

Thanks. I'll be 6+6 if my dates are right, so here's hoping! Smile

Do tell the sonographer that you think you are pregnant. Not all ultrasound is the same.

I was a lot further on than you but when I went for a liver scan during pregnancy the first thing sonographer did was a quick check on baby.

Thanks all, I've just been and I did see it! Lovely sonographer Grin

Like Graciescotland I had a liver scan, in late pregnacy. The sonographer did my scan then asked if I knew what I was having. I said that I did - a boy - and he said correct, because his scan could pick up baby as well, and he was definitely a baby boy. I would have thought that the scan will pick up anything in the area, if that makes sense, so it should pick up baby for you if the heart beat is visible at that stage.
