I have no toncils; could I still have toncillitis?

I had them out 23 years ago

But I have a large(ish) ulcer on the back of my throat, the bits the toncils were cut off look red & swollen, my neck is stiff & my glands a bit puffy and I have a bit of a temperature - oh & my throat hurts

What do you think?

Me too!

I had mine removed aged 5 ( 39 years ago-yikes!). Today I have a very sore throat, feel a bit pathetic - hot and sweaty.. Oh, yes the swollen glands too.

I guess it is just a throat infection - general 'cold'.

Hope you soon feel better!

My brother had his tonsils out as a teenager and recently had tonsillitis(well he thinks he had it). Not sure how that works though.

Hope you feel better soon!

Yes you can unfortunately. You can get tonsillitis on the tonsil beds which will need AB's to clear up if bacterial

MrsTrellisOfSouthWales · 25/06/2012 20:12

They "grow" back so yes it is possible.

KatyMac · 25/06/2012 20:13

"feel a bit pathetic" yep that's me

Oh poo

I feel a visit to the doctor coming on; it's been 4 days & no improvement (but no worse either - meh!)

Yes - they cannot remove the part that connects to your tongue - the lingual tonsils, iirc - so those can get infected. But generally there is less to infect, which is at least something.

isw · 25/06/2012 20:14

Yep, I had tonsillitis in the bits of left over tonsil tissue, gross or what!!

fuckityfuckfuckfuck · 25/06/2012 20:15

Yes, I had mine removed but was told they leave little 'stumps' behind, so you can still get it. I've certainly had it since they were removed, but for me the worst part of the illness was always the sheer size my tonsils would swell to, so I couldn't breathe, so it's still an improvement I suppose. But it was a bit of a bastard to realise you could still get it, all that pain of recovery for nothing. I can still feel those scabs sloughing off inside my throat...

MyLittleMiracles · 25/06/2012 20:26

I had a really bad throat infection, think couldnt move my neck, felt weak shaky, couldnt talk, eat or drink anything cos my throat was too swollen and the first things the hospital asked was about a rash and then if i still had my tonsils, I still have lots of white lumps at the back of my throat 9 months later, but am fine otherwise, so while it mught be tonsilitis it might also be a really bad throat infection. I should add i had to have anti biotics for mine, and the first lot didnt work so was prescribed a second lot

Fiveflowers · 25/06/2012 20:33

I had my tonsils removed when I was five. And again when I was 21.

I was told they either grew back or hadn't been totally removed the first time.

KatyMac · 25/06/2012 22:30

Eeww - not nice

I'll see how they are tomorrow

There is a ring of lymph tissue in the throat, all of these are "tonSils", all of them can be inflamed = tonSillitis. The pharyngeal tonSils are the ones removed, they are the largest but the others remail. It's called Waldeyer's ring.

KatyMac · 30/06/2012 09:31

That's probably more than I needed to know Wink.....but the good news is it got better!

Thanks
