I've just had quite big surgery bunion related deformities and pain.
I've not been able to weight bear on the balls of my feet for about 2 years, but I kept putting it off because the recovery time is very long. And also I am a coward
Anyway, last week I had fusion of my big toe joint, and osteotomies of 2nd, 3rd and 4th metatarsals with titanium screws.
I had it done under spinal anaesthetic.
I am a bit of a control freak, and really did not want a GA.
I spoke to the anaesthetist, and he was brilliant.
He said yes, he could do spinal, but warned that it is difficult to say how effective it would be, as they would be operating on the farthest tip of my foot, and therefore the farthest nerve endings. So he would see what happened, and if necessary we still had the option of progressing to GA
Within 2-3 minutes my legs were heavy, and although I could feel touch, I couldnt feel much else.
The surgeon tested just before starting, and decided to also do an ankle block.
I felt some pressure and vibrations when they were drilling, but no pain whatsoever.
The op took about 2 hrs. I had a screen up so I couldnt see anything, and the anaesthetist and the ODP stayed and chatted to me all the way through.
It worked for me, but its not suitable for everyone. It is the anaesthetist doing the list who decides whether a general anaesthetic is appropriate or not, and to be fair, genreal anaesthetics are very safe these days.
I am based in London, and my absolutely lovely surgeon is Mr James Calder, a foot and ankle specialist.
