Can anyone help. Yesterday ds (2.6yr) had lots of, what looked like, snot stuck in his eye lashes yesterday morning. He has a stinking cold at the moment so this is what I thought it was. However, at lunchtime I wiped a little yellow guck from the corner (near the tear duct) which I thought could have been old 'sleep', but it was sticky not crispy iykwim. But then his eye got a bit bloodshot by the end of the day, not majorly, just on the outside bit. Dh tells me he banged his head when they were tumbling. However, he wakes again this morning with guck round the same eye and it's still bloodshot.

Is this something I should start to worry about? Could he have some sort of eye infection or is he just dragging stuff from his nose up to his eye in the night? We've not had any sort of eye infection in this house before so I'm not sure what to look out for or what to do. Also have 3mo dd and I really don't want to pass anything on to her! Any advice/help very much appreciated.

My DS is the same age as yours and every time he gets a cold he gets gooey eyes.. however, he has had conjunctivitus (sp?) once and his eye really went bloodshot and pink, partly closing up too. I took him to the docs expecting to get something for it, but I was told it would go on its own, and it did. Took about 3-5 days.

HTH!

Same as mumatuks. Ds had an wful cold a couple of weeks ago, following on from the vomitting bug, and woke up one morning with really sticky eyes as well. Took him to GP for general check-up, as he'd had been so poorly for what seemed like weeks and GP said that sticky eyes were probably a viral infection connected with the cold and would go away by itself eventually. We bathed his eyes regularly in warm salted water, and about 4-5 days later it did go.

At M&T the next week mentioned it and everyone had had it - must be something going around. HTH

Phew, thanks for that. Have been bathing it with warm water and changed his flanels today. Will do that regularly for a few days and keep an eye on it.

i would go to the doc to get it checked coz if it is conjunctivitis it is very infectious. they just give eye drops to clear it up.

You can also get some saline solution from your gp's. If you ask they'll give you a prescription for it to get with your drops.
It's great for cleaning the eye when it gets all gunky.

Sadly this is a weak spot for my dd so we regularly have them in our house.

me too - my youngest ds is 20mths and has had conjunctivitis about 6 times so i know what a nightmare it is. i even have arepeat prescription arranged for the drops. someone said it csn be due to blocked tear ducts but they wont treat until they are 2 as can clear by itself. nbg have you been told what probable cause is? may also be down to fact he goes to nursery 2 days pw and other people send their kids when they know they have it!

Is the eye sticky all day with conjunctivitis? His cleared up all morning, but looked a little weepy after his nap, but not enough for me to wash his eyes again (I would have done if he hadn't protested so much though!).

with my ds i just cant get his eye clear when he has a bout. is red both inside the eye and the skin around it. tends to get worse if not treated but that might be just him!

ernest · 28/02/2006 09:28

i think you should wipe the eye from inside out, not other way round.

Enid · 28/02/2006 09:30

you can buy antibiotic drops over the counter now

Optrex do them

cleared dd2s sticky pink eye up in three days (carry on using it for 5 though)

99redballoons · 02/03/2006 16:54

Damn it damn it damn it... went to the docs on Tues and got some chloramphenicol eye drops and cream. I have been using them (eye drops cos ds just got stressed with the cream) for the last three days, but dozy me didn't notice I was supposed to keep them in the FRIDGE !!!! ARRRGH, what have I done to my ds??? No wonder it doesn't seem to be improving. Does it just make the antibiotics inactive or could something worse happen, eg. bacteria grow inside the bottle and I'm adding to the number of germs in his eyes already??

I'm so upset. I can't believe I've messed up. Off to get some more from the pharmacist tonight (I think the Optrex one is the same thing). Or should I go and see the docs again tomorrow? It says to finish the 5 day course and I've been administering it since Tues afternoon, four times a day... :( I feel sooo bad.

Actually they only need to be kept below 25 degree c which is less than the averae room temp. They should still be fine, think the ointment can get a bit runny and hard to apply if left out the fridge for to long, but as long as they've not been sitting on a radiator they should be fine.

If it is not clearing up I would consider going back to gp for some fucithalmic acid, worked at treat for dp!

chapsmum · 02/03/2006 17:02

Oh and althought they are a pain the cream is usually stonger than the drops and works for slightly longer,

right before he goes to bed as this is when the eye drys up and infection thrives, and first thing in the morning are the absolute best times!

99redballoons · 02/03/2006 17:06

Thanks chapsmum... we've had our heating on 21-23deg the last few days it's been so cold.... typical. I have put them in the fridge. Yes noticed the cream was stronger. Will put that in tonight and the morning. May ring NHS direct too and see what they say. Thanks!

Just read the cream is below 25deg, but the eye drops should be kept at 2-8deg.

TBH I find the drops abit useless, stick with the cream!!! be strong woman!
