My little girl was born 5 weeks ago today by caesarian and on Thursday my lochia turned from straw coloured to bright red with some red mucous in it. I've had light to medium spotting since then, but Dr Google says I shouldn't have a period until at least 6 weeks after.

I'm a bit worried now because I've been out walking with my baby in her big, heavy pram (which I have to lug up and down a couple of high steps to get in and out of my house) nearly every day since the Thursday after she was born and I've also been back in part time work for over a week, so I hope I haven't damaged anything by being a complete idiot and pushing myself too hard. Please slap me and tell me it's completely normal and I need to get a grip.

Can you check with your midwife or GP? I had a very similar thing when my first baby was about 6 weeks old and assumed I had my period - was feeling dreadful with it too. But I then had a fright when I passed a very large clot and it turned out that part of the placenta had been retained. It was very frightening when it happened as I had no idea what was going on, but I felt better immediately afterwards and the bleeding stopped. I went to the doctor who sent me for an ultrasound to be sure it had all gone and I had no problems afterwards.

It may not be this at all in your case and I am sure it is nothing you need to worry about, but I felt like what happened to me was one of the things about having babies that no one warns you about, and it might be worth you getting it checked out.

Oh sorry, just seen you had a caesarian so my experience may not apply at all. If you are worried def go to your doctor though - just so you don't worry about it. Smile

Drat. Thanks for answering. I'd best ring the doctor tomorrow.
