Help! Something scary showed up on my ECG.

Posted this in AIBU as its a high traffic forum...didn't realise there was a whole health section haha!

I am 27 and have been experiencing chest pains and shortness of breath. I had an ECG (my dad has cardiomyopathy which developed in him at around the same age).

The ECG print out thing says: Right Ventricular Hypertrophy and Repolarization Abnormality.

I've booked an appointment to discuss with my GP but I'm desperate for advice from anyone who might have experienced this or know someone who has.

I'm more than a little scared but trying to keep a level head and stay happy.

HELP!

Take nothing of what the machine print out reads. It needs to be looked at by someone who can clinically assess your wave patterns.

And stand clear of Google... you'll always get the worst case scenario!

When is your GP appointment?

Hey, thanks for your reply. Got an app. Monday afternoon. Am just feeling so ill... Hopefully it's just an anomaly on the scan and means nothing.

Do you know what Right Ventricular Hypertrophy is? I admit I Googled it once but haven't found any helpful information. I'm staying away from Dr Google now though until I see GP.

Yes I do... it simply means that the lower chamber on the right side of your heart is bigger. It can be 'normal' in pregnant women and people who are very fit (the heart is a muscle and therefore can enlarge with exercise).

Try to have a quiet weekend, but obviously seek medical help if the pain / shortness of breath changes or worsens. If your GP is concerned about your ECG s/he will refer you to the cardiology dept.

Can't tell you anything about the hypertrophy, but a few years ago I had an ECG which noted "minor non-specific repolarisation changes". It was looked at by a cardiologist who advised that it was normal and nothing to worry about. So that element may be nothing of concern.

I went through this earlier on the year. GP will refer you to a cardiologist who will repeat the ecg and probably organise an echocardiogram or a cardiac mi. Dont panic till results come back. Avoid Dr Varnava who is a world authority with a pants manner unless you are rich and famous.

Agree with snoozy - ignore what the ECG comment says, and tbh unless your GP has a recent background in cardiology before going into general practice then he/she won't be in a position to give you sound advice. Wait to see a cardiologist.
