vaginal thrush? dd is 2.5

pooka · 26/02/2006 15:30

Bit graphic, I'm afraid.....

dd has seemed a bit squirmy recently. Smells slightly fishy (tmi). Have noticed white paste in her vagina. Is it possible she could have thrush? And if so, should I take her to the GP?

Thanks for any advice

Has she been on anti biotics lately?

NotQuiteCockney · 26/02/2006 15:32

Any chance it's worms?

If it might be thrush (which is possible), you should try to find out what's caused it. Is she still in nappies? Any chance she could be allowed to "air" some of the time?

NotQuiteCockney · 26/02/2006 15:32

The squirming could be caused by worms. Not the smell. Probably not the paste.

Speeha · 26/02/2006 15:49

May be thrush. When DD1 was small (less than 2) she had v bad nappy rash and the doctor suggested normal over the counter Cannestan (sp?) which cleared it up immediately - may be worth a try for this - as well as NQC's advice of "airing"

Enid · 26/02/2006 15:51

thrush doesnt smell fishy

she might have been having a fiddle and got a bit of an infection?

wash with cool water for a few days and 'air' as others have said

Cassoulet · 26/02/2006 15:53

My dd had thrush (oral and vaginal) almost from birth (don't know why, I never had it). I didn't give her marmite for quite a few years, fed her live natural yoghurt and when it was really sore I covered her nether regions with yoghurt. She seems to have grown out of it now, but if it comes back I'll do the same.

BROWNY · 26/02/2006 15:53

Pooka - my dd has always been very sensitive and has suffered from thrush since she was around your dd's age, poor mite used to cry in pain and said she needed a bath to feel better. After numerous visits to G.P., and lots of Canestern cream, that she was just extra sensitive and needed a daily bath in plain water, whether she was dirty or not, just to freshen up the area. At 8,the problem has settled down and she hardly ever suffers HTH

Enid · 26/02/2006 15:54

tbh it just seems like she needs a good wash!

they get that white smeggy stuff if you dont wash it out and that will account for fishy smell too...

miabl2 · 27/02/2006 13:25

Don't know if it would work but I started to develop thrush because of the pill and I find that taking one of those activia drinks each day is keeping it under control. I've suffered since I was a child. Sugar definitely makes it worse so get the drink with no added sugar (think its only the activia original, I checked all the labels. I was given canesten so much as a child that I developed an allergy to it!!

pooka · 27/02/2006 14:41

Thanks for the advice! Needs a good wash Enid!! ShockGrin
She has just had 2 courses of antibiotics for ear infections.
Is just out of nappies during the day, but still in for night time. Will try and max out the heating and get her to run around knicker free. Doesn't help that she is obsessed with wearing skirts and, it being winter, wears tights a lot at the moment.
She wont thank me for cutting out the sweets...but needs must.
I never know quite how through one should be with the gina washing - know that soaps can be irritants and don't want to disrupt the natural ph and all that...but maybe I have been a bit lax (Blush). Will see if it clears up naturally...fingers crossed.

If hse has had ABs lately, that might be the cause of thrush (if that is what she has). That was how i caught thrush anyway Blush

These days Canesten is available over the counter so it might be worth getting some to relieve her discomfort.

HappyMumof2 · 27/02/2006 16:31

does sound more like a hygiene issue - sorry!
Thrush doesn't smell fishy (as already said) and the white discharge will collect there if not cleaned properly.
Do you wash her in the morning as well as a bath at night?

laundrylover · 27/02/2006 16:53

Hey Pooka,
I'm experiencing just the same with Tilly so thanks for the thread! She has tights on day and night to stop her scratching her excema and it's really hard to air her fanny!!
I also reckon it comes with being dry in the day and doing little dribbles!
We are washing with a flannel and plain water and it seems to be improving.
Good luck.

miabl2 · 27/02/2006 17:09

Only wash with water, soaps are really irritating if you're prone to thrush. I also found that the only washing powder I can use is Surcare because the other ones make my thrush worse, don't have any allergy symptoms normally but get really itchy when underwear is washed with anything else. The antibiotics are a nightmare, I get thrush every time I have to take an antibiotic it just upsets the balance in my gut and thrush can smell fishy!!

pooka · 27/02/2006 20:13

Thanks Miabl2 - am vaguely reassured that I might not be the least hygenic mother in the world and that it may be thrush iyswim. Will get good supply of probiotics and cut out the sugar as that worked for me in the past. We shall see....
With you on the dribbles laundrylover - absolute pain!

sorry

thrush DOESNT smell fishy

fishy fanjo is either not washing or a bacterial infection

pooka · 27/02/2006 20:27

Fishy fanjo!

OP posts:
Enid · 27/02/2006 20:29

lol

if it makes you feel any better dd1 had this and I realised I hadnt actually washed her fanjo for about 10 days - she just had baths every night but I didnt always wash her. I agree that soap can be an irritant. I used a tiny bit of mild soap and washed her and bingo! she was fine.

pooka · 27/02/2006 20:32

Thanks Enid - glad I'm not the only one who expects it to be more or less self-cleaning, oven like.

I wash dd down below every morning, with Boots Sensitive Head to Toe wash and she bathes every night. No fishy smells in our house!

Just a thought, as she's had antibiotics, can children get BV?

pooka · 27/02/2006 20:59

What's BV? Bacterial V.....?

OP posts:
HappyMumof2 · 27/02/2006 21:20

bacterial vaginitis - it's similiar to thrush but causes a smell. It can be caused by antibiotics, too much soap, biological washing powder etc. Just not sure if little girls can get it.

pooka · 27/02/2006 21:36

Interesting...
Wonder if the ab's might have had an effect (while making a mental note to have a thorough go of washing her tomorrow).

OP posts:
HappyMumof2 · 27/02/2006 21:51

it's hard to know what to do with the washing though, as you said, too much poking about isn't good either. I can still get dd to lay on her changing mat in the mornings so I just flannel her over with warm water and this soap free stuff.

Do you use non biological?

pooka · 28/02/2006 20:42

Yes - use non-bio. dd is incredibly ticklish so its a bit of a struggle!
