DD (6) often gets earache, and apart from dosing her up with Calpol (and Ibuprofen - at the same time, if necessary, then at the appropriate intervals) she finds it quite soothing to have something warm on her ear - we have a small wheat bag that we heat up in the microwave that she cuddles (obviously you have to make sure it doesn't get too hot). He might find the same - worth a try. HTH - it's miserable for them, isn't it.

oooh a wheat bag i never thought of that, will have alook for ours, it has lavender in it too (or did!) which will help him sleep.

Had forgotten that i could do ibuprofen as well as calpol, will turn to that later on, he seems to be doing ok at mo with Calpol and Harry Potter!

Thank you Jackie No

Oh Honey, poor little man How is he now?

Als had ear infections a lot as a baby/toddler and they were so painful for him. If J has an infection he will definately be crying with the pain and will need antibiotics to clear it. Have to say though, with Al, the first dose of AB's calmed it soooo quickly. Get him off to the docs tomorrow if it's still hurting.

Hmm, and quiet with 2 small boys? What's that then?

suss · 26/02/2006 20:32

Docs don't like giving antibiotics for ear infections any more - just give pain meds Calpol and nurofen can be given together thay take between 3 and 5 days to clear. just been to see my Doc with DB on Fri! seem to be over the worst now.

Hi my mum and my self swear by olive oil. Heat a tea spoon and drizzle olive oil on the back of the spoon and drip a few drops into the affected ear.
When I was a child I had constant sore ears and it does work. Also something warm over the ear for comfort.Try it. Will need to see G.P in the morning for an atibiotic.

RedRidingHood · 26/02/2006 20:35

I agree with the olive oil - can get dropper bottles from chemist to warm it up in.

When dd had an ear infection a doctor at the hospital told me to cut an onion in half, heat it up in the microwave or oven, wrap it in a cloth and hold it again'st the ear. Not sure if it works as i did,nt have an onion in the house but worth a try.

calebsmummy · 26/02/2006 20:58

Ah, this was 11 years ago that he was given AB's. The 2 little ones have never had an earache so I don't know what they do now. They change their minds so much!!

I can really sympathise having just got over a nsty ear infection myself. My dr also doesn't like to give antibiotics for them, but I saw an out of hours dr and he gave me some. This could have been becuase of the very sudden onset and no prior cold or infection to bring it on. I went from being fine at 8pm to a perforation at 4am, and my goodness it was painful.

The only thing that I found to help a little was a warm compress. I used those gel hand warmer things wrapped in a t-shirt. For me, paracetomol/ibuprofen did nothing, didn't touch the pain at all. Oh, and try to keep your ds elevated a little as lying down makes it more painful. I hope he feels better soon

MerlinsBeard · 26/02/2006 21:58

Thank you all for advice, i'm a bit concerned about pouring olive oil down his ears loL!

Hes a bit moany in his sleep but for now, calpol and ibuprofen are working.

Have dug out the wheatbag, think its down to a cold rather than an infection but not ruling it out completely!

olive oil is perfectly safe to put in ears, it is a less potent than antibiotic or decongestent drops it coats and soothes the inside of the ear. A HV I used to work with used to reccomed it regularly
