loss of sense of taste - anyone come across it??

Hi

My mum has completely lost her sense of taste. It happened quite suddenly really and wasn't a gradual loss. She is otherwise in good health.
She has seen as ENT consultant and had various blood tastes and all have come back normal. It's a mystery and she is unlikely to get it back according to him.
She is getting pretty depressed about it as it has taken the pleasure out of eating and cooking - both things she loves to do! She has also lost weight as a result of eating less.
Has anyone any experience of this?
thanks!

I'd ask for a neuro referral.

Does she still have her sense of smell?

sallycinamon · 17/06/2012 20:55

Knocks my theory on the head then. I hope you can resolve it soon, I know how miserable it is as I lot my sense of smell and taste for a while.

Did they just come back on their own?

I'm wondering if it could be stress-related.

I suffer quite often with loss of taste but always lose my sense of smell too.The gp prescribed a nasal spray called Nasonex which solved the problem within a week. I think my problem is caused by swelling (maybe allergy related) high up in my nose and this nasal spray seems to be the only thing that works. I do feel sorry for your mum because it is a very depressing thing to live with. It takes all the pleasure out of cooking and eating. Although I always lose a lot of weight when I lose it because I can't be bothered to eat much. Maybe she can try the Nasonex

I have read somewhere that zinc deficiency is associated with loss of taste, maybe worth looking into? This can happen with issues around absorption of nutrients.
