so he put the needle in her hand she became very very drowzy and sleepy but was still awake so i had to wait in the wating room while she had the fillings,
then 20 nail biting mins later the dentist had finished and i carried a drowsy not with it all dd to the recovery room, it was horrible it was like she was drunk she couldnt talk or sit up or walk it was horrible, the nurse told me dd had to have 11 fillings in total bloody hell 11, so i burst into tears cause dd was so out of it bless her i was holding her hand and she mumbled i love you muumy what a cow i am what did i do wrong for her teeth to get that bad,?

she is better now cant rember anything, it took 4 hours for her to get back to normal yesterday she puked in the car on the way home,,

I dont know what to say but I am sending you all my love and hugs and just the fact you are so upset by this whole thing makes me believe you are not a bad mum xxx

DS needed 2 fillings .. it is a common occurence that the enamel on children's teeth does not form completely thus meaning they get decayed very easily

this happens in the womb and there is nothing you can do about it

it does not affect adult teeth

so unless you've been feeding her loads of sweets throughout the day and giving her juice / fizzies in a bottle stop beating yourself up .. its just one of those things

ScummyMummy · 24/02/2006 18:45

Aw sweetie. I would be very sad at this too. But some kids teeth are just more prone than others, apparently. Sorry you both had such an ordeal.

satine · 24/02/2006 18:45

Nikcola don't feel bad. My ds has a spot of decay on his front tooth - the dentist said it was due to a fault in the enamel but I reckon he was just trying to be nice. And to my shame I'm still not fanatical about cleaning my kids' teeth. We do it every night but sometimes in the morning I just don't get round to it. Blimey, there are a million things to make us feel guilty as mums. They're only her milk teeth, and she probably won't remember anything at all about this when she's 18.

nikcola · 24/02/2006 18:46

the dentist said her teeth suck in sugar, she doesnt have loads of sweets she brushes her teeth twice a day, but i think its the squash (no added sugar) yeh right that done it

Please don't feel so bad,at least you have taken her to the dentist. If it's any consolation my bf ds had to have 6 fillings under sedation aged 5yrs,this is the child who has never had anything other than water to drink since being a baby and doesnt get sweets, choc,or biscuits. My friend was told it was unfortunately just th emake up of his teeth and told to avoid dried fruit(which she gave instead of sweets). If your dd does have lots of sticky sweeties then at leastyou can cut down before her permanent teeth come through.

chapsmum · 24/02/2006 18:50

how awful for you.. In scotland we have just been told that childrens toothpast does not have enough flouride in it . Having to use adult toothpast on the wee chap, he hates it!!

You are not a bad parent you have done all you can for her.

nikcola · 24/02/2006 19:03

nikcola - she would if she were thirsty , honestly. Dilute the squash down more and more and give it only at mealtimes. If she is thirsty in between she can only water.

nikcola · 25/02/2006 10:40

ok will try that no more squash!

cheese is supposed to help if you eat a small piece after dried fruit (something to do with mouth ph i think), milk good for teeth so if she doesnt want water she could have that. (listen to me giving advice i only do kids teeth once a day usually and ds may have to have 2 fillings next time we go )

i had to have 4 teeth pulled out when i was about that age, i remember lots of blood and my mum having to take a tea towel to soak it up but i dont remember being too traumatised by it, i dont think it put me off the dentist either (that happened much later when i was old enough to know better)

mojomummy · 25/02/2006 11:00

What a shame for you all Assume the dentist didn't give you any advice ?

Mine would be, make sure you clean DD's teeth twice a day - she she ever go to bed with a bottle of milk ?

Try to get her to eat some cheese after say fruit, as this helps to neutralise the acids.

Keep diluting the juice (I would stay away from the no added sugars - can you try pure fruit juice VERY diluted & only at mealtimes ? My DD only has diluted juice at then, water the rest of the time.

Don't give her boiled sweets/lollys etc. Also raisins are a killer as they are so sticky. Perhaps if you feel you need to give her something, just give something once a week after lunch/tea ?

Also check the toothpaste you use has a reasonable amount of flouride.

I think there is a dental nurse on here - Melissa's Mummy ? perhaps she could give some advice ?

lunarx · 25/02/2006 12:01

ok.. i dont think you're a bad mom. and this is a learning experience. and hopefully the dentist has given you some good advice now.

i hope she is feeling better today..and you, too!
