Had enough and off to the GP on Fri - but is he going to tell me to go away?

I've been two years ago with my dodgy hip. (And posted on here before about it) I told them how it behaves - normal most of the time then out of the blue if I stood up wrong I would be unable to put weight on my leg or to lift if from the ground and to try would be agony. If I stood and twisted wrong then I'd get a stabbing pain.

I was prodded and poked, given a blood test and an x ray and was told (after they lost, then found my results) that there was nothing wrong.

2 years on and I've learned to live with it as it only happened once every couple of months.

In the last month or so I've noticed that the same hip joint feels really tight when walking after I've been sitting for a while. I've had a couple of occasions when I've stood wrong and been unable to move until I've sat down and stood up again- once at work in front of my class of y4s where you cannot swear with the pain.

Final straw was Friday. Out with friends, nipped off to the loo and pegged it up the stairs quickly so as not to keep them waiting. Half way up the stairs my leg completely gave out with a stab of pain and I crumpled down. Thank God I was going upstairs and not down at the time. Each step was painful until I made it to a seat where I could sit and stand again. THen it was fine.

If nothing has shown up before, am I going to feel like a fool wasting their time??

Sorry to hear you are in so much pain. I don't have any experience myself but I would suggest you try and insist on getting a scan. My SIL had hip problem and an X-ray didn't show anything but a scan did and they have been able to treat her now they know what it is.

Ask for a referral to a hip surgeon.

Thanks. Will see what the good old GP says Fri evening.

Surgeons are fantastic at assessment and knowing what might help. It doesn't mean that you need surgery. Hope it goes well x

Thankyou. I was a touch annoyed last time to be told that nothing was wrong, but I was having a good run of no problems so didn't think much of it.

This time I'm not taking 'there's nothing wrong' for an answer.

Boooo.....I went and was prodded and poked. Then told it was probably something to do with my tendons and given the number for the physio dept. I need to phone them and talk to them and describe my symptoms (again) and then see whether they send me some descriptions of exercises to do through the post, or whether they will actually deign to see me.

Worth a try, but I think I'll be back again!

If you're in pain while you're waiting, would you be in a position to go to a private physio? I did for tendonitis and it's nearly gone, I would probably still in in constant pain if I'd waited for NHS treatment Sad.

Just spotted this. Sounds like you're putting your hip out, literally. Could be an unstable pelvis, but have you ever been diagnosed hypermobile? Any other joints clicky, or weird things you can do with your fingers?

2kidsintow · 23/06/2012 14:50

I possibly could swing for private as have some savings, but I've learnt how to avoid risking making it painful.

I think I am putting my hip out, it certainly feels like it. I have no other problems with any of my joints and just a touch of arthritis in my spine. I did mention that my pelvis and ligaments were very sore when I was pregnant and that made it difficult to get around. Dr thinks I need to strengthen my muscles to help improve things.
I'll give it a go and just go back if nothing improves.

Pilates is your friend - and a Darcy Bussell DVD would be a lot cheaper than private physio :-) take it easy and make sure you work each side evenly - which is easier to do on your own as in a class they like to move through the exercises and come back to the other side so you forget how many you did iyswim...

Oh, and oddly keeping your hamstrings stretched and.your lower back loose also puts less stress on your hips, so lots of careful forward bends. hth from a fellow-sufferer
