Which Aveeno?

DaddyCool · 24/02/2006 11:20

Many many people recommended Aveeno cream for my ds who has really dry skin.

We bought Aveeno moisturizer and it works really well but it's expensive and we weren't aware there were loads of different types. dw has seen the body lotion version which I'm assuming is the one to use. it's a bit cheaper becuase you get a big tub of it as opposed to a little tube.

which one?

I use the moisturising cream. Docs can prescribe it. I ask my doc to prescribe a few tubes at a time, so cost of one prescription makes it cheaper!

I also use the aveeno hand cream but i bet daddycool wouldn't require such a thing for his manly hands!

DaddyCool · 24/02/2006 11:23

Also, I noticed it isn't actually for kids. it's just a general moisturiser for everyone.

works well though. very well.

so hattie, you just use the small 100ml tube of standard moisturiser?

interesting point about the prescription. we'll have to try that.

We use the body lotion one and slap loads on, works reaally well. Have never tried the cream though.

Hattie05 · 24/02/2006 11:26

Yes, normally ask for 3 or 4 each time i see the doc.

No its not for children, but pretty natural and ok to use on them. Tbh i don't trust things labelled for children look at Johnsons baby shampoo - hairdressers recommend it to get lighten hair dyes that have gone wrong! they say it strips the chemicals from your hair!

For this reason i am disappointed that Johnsons are the manufacturers of Aveeno, but it works so i'll deal with it.

I class it as a miracle cream after suffering all my life with excema, and having bought every cream you can find in every chemist.

anchovies · 24/02/2006 11:27

Our doctors wont prescribe it for ds? Have asked a couple of times.

DaddyCool · 24/02/2006 11:27

it's damn good.

we wash him in the bath using aqueous cream and then put this stuff on. it's quickly getting better and better.

We get DS's on prescription - his skin was so bad that the doctor prescibed us 20 100ml tubes, a big bottle of lotion and some bath stuff!! - The pharmacist was less than pleased and rung the doctor just to check he had not made a typing error!!! - With me screaming - just give me the cream in the background!!

Deffo go to your doctors and be honest say that you have tried this cream and it really heps and you would like to get it on prescription.

(Or I will sell you some at a reduced rate!! He He!!

Hattie05 · 24/02/2006 11:28

Anchovies, thats not on. I have moved twice since using aveeno, also moving GP's. Each time when i've asked for it they havn't known what i meant, but they bring out their little book of stuff they can prescribe and its in there so they have to prescribe it!

well, a standard tube is £6.66 but boots has 1/3 off right now.

I think dw bought some body lotion so we'll give that a go as well and see if it's just as good.

tbh daddy cool i havn't tried the lotion, interested to hear if it is as good.

calvemjoe · 25/02/2006 21:25

I get 4 tubes on prescription for my ds every month. Its the only thing that works for him.

kiskidee · 25/02/2006 21:43

I've used the cream and lotion on dd and find that the lotion is as effective as the cream in her case even though it is much thinner. I've found that the Aveeno lotion sold in the US is also thicker than the one sold in the UK but no difference in effectiveness.

miabl2 · 27/02/2006 13:29

I get aveeno on prescription for DS as well. It's fantastic stuff I was just commenting at the weekend that his skin has completely cleared up. I get 3 tubes at a time from doc/health visitor and also the aveeno bath/shower stuff. Combination of both has been fantastic. The acqueous cream only stopped his skin from getting any worse but this has cleared it completely.

pooka · 27/02/2006 14:45

I used the cream on d (still do on his shins and shoulders and head) and it made an absolutely enormous difference. Completely cleared up the rashes and dryness he had had till then.

DaddyCool · 27/02/2006 15:49

tried the body lotion on the weekend. just as good as everyone says.. and better value for money.

dw jaw dropped when i told her she could get it on prescription if she asked forcefully. she'll get it. she's good at asking for things forcefully Smile

Aveeno cream is so brilliant, but I wish they'd make it in bigger tubes. Didn't know a body lotion existed. BTW Has anyone tried Barefoot Botanicals? I got a free sample in post today so will try after bath. Its SOS rescue cream is supposed to be very good for excema. It is very very expensive though. I wonder how you go about getting things available on prescription....

Pixiefish · 27/02/2006 16:12

Get down the doc's and get it on prescription if it's for your ds daddycool. Then it'll be free. Get it put on repeat and you just ask the receptionist for the repeat. I think aveeno is fab and has really helped dd's eczema

DaddyCool · 27/02/2006 16:50

will do. it's a miracle cream. it really is. you don't come across this kind of thing often. ds has his baby soft skin back (Blush)

Another vote for Aveeno here. We get it on prescription too.

Tell your GP it's the Mumsnet rules.

Wags · 27/02/2006 18:42

I use it for my dd who had baby excema and it was the only thing that worked. Still use it on her dry skin and on ds and recommend it to any one who will listen to me singing its praises! I get it on prescription from my Dr and the one I use isn't available on the shelf at our chemist although they have a range of Aveeno stuff. It only seems to be over the counter. The tube is 100ml, cream with green writing 'Aveeno Cream - Moisturising Cream with Colloidal Oatmeal'. My Dr told me not to use the ones on the counter as some of them had other stuff in them. Having said that I had already been using one from the shelf and it was working so....?!

Am pleased after reading this thread - I have very dry skin and bought some of this on offer in Boots last week. (The Body lotion, I think - can't be bothered to go upstairs and check!!)

Am really glad that everyone thinks it's so good. Smile
