have been told by my GP that i have a large uterine polyp and need to be seen urgently at the local hospital gynae dept.

has anybody got any experience of this and can tell me what to expect, treatment etc
does it mean hysterectomy - am in my 50s so not too bothered if this is the case but would like to chat to somebody else in my position

I think it will depend on how large 'large' is!

I had a tiny one, and it fell off as they were trying to remove it. It is standard to remove uterine polyps, as they can - rarely - turn cancerous eventually. They will probably remove it and biopsy, if they can, but if its too big or in a very awkward place I suppose they might suggest hysterectomy.

Do you mind me asking how they dx it? Was it a scan that showed it up? Only that I've had some of the symptoms for having a polyp and am waiting on a scan and worried Sad

Hope all goes well for your appointment, glasshouses.

sorry for TMI but could feel something internally as it has come out my womb into vagina - so gp could see it when doing internal. don't know if it is the only one though

weird thing is that other than that no symptoms - no bleeding, discomfort, discharge etc. so would have been none the wiser. waiting for urgent referral to gynae clinic so will know more then.

would really appreciate hearing from anybody with similar experiences as don't know what to expect or what treatment will be. i stupidly googled - not a good idea - and i think worst case scenario seems to be hysterectomy if not cancerous - so i am waiting to see

A friend had a small one and had it removed under a light GA. it was mainly around her cervix and showed up during a smear.
I think it's highly unlikely you would need a major op- more likely removed under a local or light GA as a day case.
