Cracked fingers. Ow! Ow! Ow!

spidermama · 23/02/2006 20:44

I have three plasters on the tops of my fingers. I need five but then I'd never be able to type.

Why on earth is the skin at the top of my fingers cracking at the corners of the nails? I'd bloody agony.

I have recently aquired a dishwasher so I thought things would get better but it's worse.

DH has it too. What's wrong with us? Something dietary perhaps?

Any ideas would be very welcome.

I have this problem too and yes it does hurt - LOTS. My only remedy is handcream and or vaseline and when i cant bear it anymore plasters. Its always worst in winter

I have no idea what causes it though

spidermama · 23/02/2006 20:48

Have you got any calendula cream, sm? When I get these I put that on at night, with a plaster on top to stop it rubbing off, and they are much better by morning.

Gloworm · 23/02/2006 20:49

try taking some fish oil or flax oil, this has helped me.

chapsmum · 23/02/2006 22:08

Do you use a computer at work, my sister had this. it turned out to be contact dermatitus from the stuff they were cleaning her keyboard with. mild steroid cream from the doctor and a dirty keyboard should sort it out.

spidermama · 23/02/2006 22:56

No computer except the one here at home whicn never sees cleaning chemicals.

I'll try flax oil. I must admit I never use hand cream. Clearly I must start. Any recommendation? My dh has a tub of E45. Will this do?

I find e45 to be less than useful, but might be worth a go. dipro base epaderm, how about treating yourself to some o/n moisturising gloves?

by the way spide, sorry for change of subject, but how is your ds?? have his readings settl4ed?

spidermama · 23/02/2006 23:01

They're mostly settled at the moment chapsmum. He's still in the so called honeymoon phase though so I'm prepared for them to go a bit wild again. He's settling down quite well with it, give or take the odd pannicky episode usually at night time.

Thanks for asking.

great news, am so impressed at how well your doing! keep me posted!

joe35 · 23/02/2006 23:08

Buy mepore tape from the chemist and tape your fingers up where they are sore going to bed and in the morning when you take the tape off you will see a difference. It works as I do it myself.

My DH is a "horny-handed" print maker and has had great success with Compeed you can get it in Boots - It's supposed to be for feet I think.

gingernut · 23/02/2006 23:34

I put a moisturiser (I use E45) on bad cracks, then a plaster over the top, overnight. Would second taking fish oil. Boots also do a `skin, hair and nails' supplement which might help.

i have horrific scaly hands at the moment (nice! :) ) which i attribute to extended b/f, eating crap and constant hand washing after nappy changes/doing dishes etc. i have tried everything and i mean everything going, e45, atrixo, vaseline, vaseline hand and nail, neutrogena, burts bees, sudocream (!), savlon, l'occtaine shea butter, and many many more. i have just discovered the answer!!!!!!!

crabtree and evelyn hand recovery. it costs 12.50 and it is amazing!

I've tried germoline New Skin since this thread started, and it's brill on the places where it's already cracked.
