My mum is booked for a colonoscopy tomorow afternoon, she has been having blood in her poo recently, well for a few weeks now, she is also getting stomach pains, she hasn't lost any weight and she is 63 years old. After testing her stools, there showed an abnormality. I am absoulately worried and stressed that it's bowel cancer Sad

Any reassurance?

Only in that there are lots of things it could be other than bowel cancer Smile

And besides, my BF's mum had bowel cancer 15 years ago (at around the same age as your mum) and is absolutely fine now. She had surgery, no problems since. It needn't be dire, though obviously v scary xxx

Good luck to your DM for tomorrow. It could be lots of things, but if it is cancer, there's lots of good treatment out there.

sweetsandmoresweets · 13/06/2012 16:03

Thanks ladies, fingers crossed.x

Good luck tomorrow. There are lots and lots of other causes out there, don't jump to cancer right away. Even if it is, caught early, it's pretty treatable. My grand father had it and was fine. Really hope it all works out Smile

I think it's because as soon as the dr says they are checking for bowel cancer, you just start panicking.

Bowel cancer is definitely one of the most treatable cancers. I know two quiet elderly people (certainly over 63) who have recovered from it this year alone. But, like others have said, there are many other bowel conditions which produce the same symptoms. I won't tell you not to worry because I know you will!

jkklpu · 13/06/2012 16:19

There are different types of bowel cancer, one more aggressive than another, afaik, and they have strong genetic links. Several members of my dh's family died of early onset cancer; others had the cancer and recovered. All those at potential risk are recommended for screening every 2 years as a result.

I hate the waiting, worst thing is knowing my mum she probably tell me it's nothing even if it is cancer, she can't stand me worrying.

I had bowel cancer last year. What I would say to you is that if your mum has it, don't make it all about you. My mum told everybody she had ever met (and then some) even tho I had only planned to tell immediate family, as she was so upset :( Not once did she stop to think how I was feeling and what I wanted. It was poor her, what a shock, her DD has cancer.

Hopefully it won't be. There are many other conditions with similar circumstances.

Hope your Mum's ok sweet.

That really irritates me Sabriel - some people have to make everything about them. Hope you're well now! Smile

sweetsandmoresweets · 14/06/2012 10:40

Thanks ladies, i'm just waiting and wishing the day away, not nice i know, but 3 just seems ages away. I will ring them in the evening to see what happened. I think if it is cancer, then she wouldn't know today anyway as they have to do more tests i assume.

Mum had her colonoscopy this afternoon, basically there was a lump there which they removed, they said it wasn't cancer but it would have turned into cancer if left untreated. Could it have been a polyp? haven't spoken to mum yet just dad, mum was asleep, she was quite sore.

Just wanted to say that that all sounds very positive! Great news for your Mum. Don't forget to be encouraging and upbeat when you speak to her - she could probably do without worrying about you worrying iykwim. Afraid I don't know about polyps ... but, hey, it sounds like good news??

BasilDonna · 14/06/2012 19:45

Sounds like a polyp.
Good thing they caught it.

sweetsandmoresweets · 14/06/2012 19:57

Thanks ladies, yes i will be upbeat when i see her, i think it does sound like polyps, good they caught it early.
