08454647 for a start. Try not to panic.

stephanie21 · 23/02/2006 13:53

ring for an ambulance if his temp is that high.stupid that your gp doesnt deal with emergencies til after 2!

Flossam · 23/02/2006 13:53

stephanie21 · 23/02/2006 13:54

how old is you baby??

can you give him a tepid bath or sponge him with cool (not cold) water...
cold flannel on his head...

Has he had a high temperature like this before?

Flossam · 23/02/2006 13:56

Right it is five to two. Ring docs in five minutes, or take him up there now, by the time you get there, it will be two. 39.5 for a temp. I don't think he'd get convulsions at that temp.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 23/02/2006 13:56

dont get me started on that cod

he keeps throwing up so i dont see how he will keep ibuprofen down can i give when i tried medised just half hour ago?

I don't know either. How far is docs? Just take him up there. I don't think you need an ambulance yet.

jinglybits · 23/02/2006 13:58

bundle him up and get him to the docs and sit there until you're seen. you are obviously very worried and so you need to go.

Angeliz · 23/02/2006 13:59

A+E, they have to see him!

rummum · 23/02/2006 14:00

have you tried the tepid sponging? or the fan or anything... is it working? is his temparture coming down at all

VeniVidiVickiQV · 23/02/2006 14:00

dp is at bottom of road. am getting ready to go docs now...... will just ring on the way - they dont see you if you just turn up. procedure apparently.

Fucking beaurocracy.....

Flossam · 23/02/2006 14:01

Rubbish. They will see you if you turn up. God I'd be tempted to stand there and ring them standing in front of them at reception on my mobile!!!

chapsmum · 23/02/2006 14:02

lol flossam, hope everything is ok vicki!

Aero · 23/02/2006 14:06

lol @ flossam! (mental pic of standing in surgery with mobile phone talking to receptionist two feet away).

Seriously that is ridiculous, but the way of the world it seems. I'm sure they'll see him if you call en route. Poor wee man. If all else fails and he's not holding anything down and has a fever so high, then A&E it is I think.

newkid · 23/02/2006 14:10

FYI, my DD had her first febrile convulsion last week (in A&E luckily). Her temp right before was 39.2. She has had higher temps with no convulsions. Turns out she had pneumonia - I wouldn't have even said that she had a bad cold or cough earlier that day - that is how quickly she deteriorated. I also thought that the temp needed to be really high for convulsions but it has more to do with the speed of illness and the speed of the temp rise. When in doubt, go to A&E is my advice! Seriously

VeniVidiVickiQV · 23/02/2006 17:06

Thanks people. Have seen Doc. No visible signs of anything. Which is what my problem was - other than high temp. Seems to think he has got the virus back again (i assume she means the norovirus or whatever it was he had 3 weeks ago).

Anyway, nothing she can do, blah blah blah give calpol and ibuprofen - together if temp doesnt go down. etc etc.

As for my Doctors - well - my Mw always used to fight my corner on that one - several times when i was pg i went for an antenatal appt and was obviously very ill - firstly with inner ear infection and next two times with a chest infection/asthma. On all three occasions she (as a professional attached to the clinic) had to plead with the receptionists to get me to see a gp there and then whilst sat in the clinic already.

Have actually had to ring from outside before for an appt having already been in the clinic - you can only speak to triage nurse on the phone - they must hide her in a locked cupboard during emergency hours which are as follows:

emergencies are allowed between 8.30am-1pm and then 2pm-3.30pm. After that you wait till the next day or go to A & E. Its much easier after normal hours to see a doc as there is an emergency clinic attached to the local hospital.

So so ridiculous.

Still, it seems DS is okay at the moment thats the important thing.

Oh, VVV, how scary - horrible when they're hot and sick

Hope he's OK. Is he getting teeth? I know they say it's not likely to cause these symptoms, but every time DS1 has cut a tooth, he's had a temp of 40 or more and the last few times he's woken up being sick in the night too. No sign of anything else being wrong though.

Hope he's much better very soon x x x

VeniVidiVickiQV · 23/02/2006 17:16

Thanks HM. Very scary when DS goes quiet and just sits on my lap - soooooo not like him - he's on the go all the time. Just got to keep a close eye on him.

I think he has got teeth coming through. He's gone off his food again this week

You on msn?

I was listening to a radio 4 programme the other day about fevers.Apparently the fever is the bodies way of fighting the infection and should not be suppresed unless it is really high.I'm not saying you shouldn't worry about a temp of 39.5,I know it's worrying, but rather that you need to let the body fight the infection and the fever is a sign that that is what is happening.

Anyway ,I'm just imparting this info that I found really interesting. You can still hear the programme on the web. It's called casenotes.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 23/02/2006 21:31

Yes, im aware of that gg. Hence my worry. He was fighting something but it wasnt clear what - at such a young age he cant describe symptoms and Meningitis is always in the back of your mind so fevers without other clear sypmtoms like having a cold/cough etc shouldnt be taken lightly.

Having had my DD bluelighted to hospital on two previous occasions for similar i dont take these things so lightly.

Thank you for thinking of me though

ggirl, although I agree with what your saying, what you have to remeber is that children cannot control their temp as well as an adult can and so antipyruetics and cooling techniques are very nessesary.
How are you doing vicki??
