Wisdom teeth extraction

DS (17) has had recurrent infections in his wisdom teeth which seem to be taking forever to emerge.

Back at the dentist's again today and he says they will both need to come out. So, does anyone have any experience, in terms of pain, method of sedation/anaesthetic, recovery time etc? I'm a bit loathe to let him have too much time off school as they're just starting A2s, and he'll be off for a couple of weeks in Sept, but wondering whether he really should be off for a few days?

Also, how swollen/bruised/sore is he likely to be afterwards?T\

TIA

my daughter had 4 molars out last summer. was very sore for a few days, painkillers every 4 hrs, alternating paracetamol with ibruprophen.
She had a GA, and was sick afterwards so stayed in overnight, other day cases went home after a few hours.
she found it hard to eat soild food, so lived on cheesy mash.

When I had my wisdom teeth out found openning my jaw hard for a while as they stretch it so far to take your teeth out,

PestoSandalissimos · 11/06/2012 20:08

When I had mine out I had to have a general anaesthetic as they were impacted so needed cutting out and stitches.

I have to say it was the most painful thing ever afterwards. I had painkillers every 4 hours, but after 3 hours I was desperate for them. It went on like this for about a week afterwards and I had to do salt mouth washes at intervals aswell. I don't think I started to feel human again for about 2 weeks.

Sorry if that's not what you wanted to hear.

PoppyWearer · 11/06/2012 20:08

Had mine out several years back. Had op on the Friday, home that night, was able to work from home by the Tuesday/Wednesday but I basically spent the week after at home.

I was a bit sore as they really had to tug to get one of mine out, apparently!

I remember being swollen for a day, bruised jaw line which healed quickly. He is young so will probably heal faster!

But probably best to cut him some slack for a few days at least afterwards.

PoppyWearer · 11/06/2012 20:09

Mine were impacted too, Fwiw.

whatlauradid · 11/06/2012 20:11

I had the routine anaesthetic in an injection. My tooth broke off during extraction and while I felt pressure I felt no pain.

whatlauradid · 11/06/2012 20:12

Mine were impacted with an exposed root fwiw.

myalias · 11/06/2012 20:19

I had a general anaesthetic in a dental hospital when I had an impacted wisdom tooth removed. It was a long time ago but if my memory serves me well the op was at 1.00 and I was home by 4.00. I drifted in and out of pain over 24 hours and I took a day off work. I have also had two other wisdom teeth removed on seperate occasions at my dentist administering a local anaesthetic. The first was a nightmare to remove due to the position of the tooth and needed assistance from two dentists. The pain was unbearable afterwards. The second tooth came out easily and minimum pain.

Little swelling and no bruising with each extraction.

Blimey it sounds pretty horrible!

Thanks everyone for your war stories!

My experience was pretty similar to pesto I'm afraid. And the really annoying thing was that I'd only had a few hours of pretty mild toothache beforehand!

Hi, I had my impacted wisdom teeth out a month ago. I had a general anathestic and was on the short stay surgical unit.
I was in a lot of pain afterwards (but compared to my other chronic health problems and my spine pain, It wasn't too bad in comparison)
I caught an infection after surgery and took 3 different antibiotics to clear infection. 4 weeks later, the dissolvable stitches are still there, my inside of cheek there is a lump, but I feel so much better than I did.

Lozza70 · 11/06/2012 20:45

I had mine removed under general in hospital as they were impacted. I had to stay overnight as I did not come round from the general well. Lots of bruising as apparently they had to put some effort into getting one of them out.

Lots of painkillers and soup for a week and I was off work for that week feeling rough for the first 3 days.

RockinD · 11/06/2012 20:55

I've had two wisdom teeth out under LA at the dentist - not impacted. I had both of them done at the end of the afternoon on Friday so I would have the weekend to recover.

Not a twinge with either. No fags, alcohol or hot food for 24 hours, an early night on the Friday and then back to normal over the weekend and in work Monday morning.

I also had a major extraction (roots rotted below gum line) under serious LA in hospital. Three stitches. I did have a couple of paracetamol after that one and a day off work, but more from the shock to the system than the actual extraction.

My dd1 had hers out at17, two at one side one week, then one at the other side a week later. She had them done on Thursday afternoons, and was back to school Tuesday both times. They were local anaesthetic. They reckon that not doing both ides at one helps healing, as your jaw retains more mobility (we are in Ireland, not UK).

As well as nurofen, she took arnica in water and rescue remedy. No external bruising. The first time was harder, it was two. The second time she had some sort of maize snack things the next day.

Her verdict was that it is less horrible than the infections a you feel yourself getting better as the days go on.

mumblechum1 · 11/06/2012 20:59

Thanks everyone. StLeger, your dd's experience doesn't sound too horrific, so hopefully ds's will be ok Smile

Mine were impacted and shattered in my gums, I ha all four taken out under a general and after I woke up I was in no pain. I kept on top of my painkillers which is the most important thing to do and rested lots, I was back to work a week and a half later. I really enjoyed watching rubbish tv and staying in bed for a while as I didn't feel at all bad just tired and a bit spaced with the co codamol which was lovely.

MrsApplepants · 11/06/2012 21:05

I had two of mine out under a general. My whole jaw hurt for 2 weeks. Was definitely worth it though. No problems since.

kellestar · 11/06/2012 21:05

First two out under GA 2 days before my GCSE's, this wasn't ideal as the pain killers made me drowsy. Recovery about two weeks. They were impacted and I had stitches.

Second two out under LA, both were broken and according to the dentist were hard to get out but they were out in less than a minute. Felt fine straightaway, painkillers for a few days and carried on as normal.

Must say that in both cases the pain was worse before they were out, the relief once they were out was immense. Could sleep easier, no throbbing pain at all.

Just keep up with salt water rinses, they really do help, get in some good pain relief and some nice mushy food.

FairPhyllis · 11/06/2012 21:18

It will very much depend on whether they are the top or bottom ones, how fully erupted they are, and whether they are impacted. I would listen to whatever the dentist recommends tbh.

I had the top ones out at the dentist's with a local - I felt a bit shaky afterwards for a day or so. I am very calm with extractions and having dentists poking around in my mouth though, so having them out under a local might not be for everyone. I have been told that my bottom ones will need a hospital extraction (they are also only partially erupted) so I am putting it off as long as possible.

Your DS could perhaps go for conscious sedation instead of a general? The recovery will probably be better in terms of not feeling sick from the anaesthetic. Everyone I know who has had a general for it has come out feeling sick and horribly bruised and swollen from being manhandled while under - my dad had to drink soup through a straw for a week.

DialMforMummy · 11/06/2012 21:24

Mine were taken out under sedation. 0 pain the following day, very quick recovery. Much better experience than anticipated.
I was totally out of it after the sedation, this must have been funny to watch. Oh and I had to have a day off the next day.

I left a dodgy wisdom tooth for months as I was so worried about having it out. In the end I was in so much pain that I had to go to out of hours dentist. No need to have been so worried. Just normal injection of anaesthetic and then out it popped. It makes a horrible noise but apart from that it was fine. No pain afterwards so felt a bit silly that I left it so long.

mumblechum1 · 11/06/2012 22:14

The dentist suggested that sedation was prob. the way to go.
