Anyone have any experience with stroke patients and progress after?

My poor FIL had a stroke a month ago and then was in a coma for 4 days. He was in intensive care for about 2 weeks and now is in a rehabilitation centre (we are not in the UK hence us not getting much from the docs with the language barrier). We would like to get an idea of possible progress. At the moment we can understand him a bit and he seems to understand what we are asking.

He can not write or even follow a dotted line. He can drink from a bottle unaided though. One eye lid is continually shut (is it likely that this will correct itself?). He seems to have switched himself off from the world though which is so sad as he was very active until now. Driving, flying, running a business etc. He can't walk or transfer himself into a wheel chair on his own.

I was just hoping if there was anyone here who had had some experience of this level of stroke and what progress the patient made?

They have some type of physio and he is doing montessori type fine motor skills exercises, match stick in holes, curtain rings on pole etc. What can we do for him? he seems very tired all the time and is mostly sleeping when we arrive. The general care has been pretty shocking but that's a whole different thread. Any input much appreciated.

so sorry to hear your story.
and unfortunately there is no way anyone can answer your question. every person who suffers a stroke is affected to varying degress in so many different ways and makes progress in their own way too.
as a general rule however, the most progress is likely to be made in the first six months, with recovery going on for 2 years post stroke.
it would probably help if you asked the therapists what their goals were at the moment and how they feel he is progressing. the sleepiness is normal but can make rehab very difficult.

you could have a look here for more information

Thank you. That is helpful. OUr children are young and pretty confused as to what has happened to Grandpa. He says yes to most questions but we're not sure if it is just his default reply. Some things he is really sharp on like the exact month age of our baby and the meeting that needs to go to next week (even remembering the time) but no one has explained to him that he can't leave for any of the planned events as we don't know how to cross that bridge. He has a lot of pride. It's not easy. Thank you for replying - I will check out the website
