Strep B - but not whilst pg

i had my copper coil in about a month ago, and after the routine swab tests came back gp phoned me and said i would have to go on a course of ab's (pen V and metronidazole) as i had Strep B).

well these ab's made me double up with abdo pain, and bad nausea, so i stopped them after 2 days.

i was never told i had this whilst pg

was just wondering if anyone had an experience? thanks

I have had strep A but not B but dont think that either can do you much harm when not pregnant. I think routine strep B tests should be done for all pregnant women - there have been too many tragedies which could have been easily avoided.

yes i agree, i dont think i was tested when pg

anyway, i want to know if i really should take these ab's or not

they really were awful

i think im worried because dr says it can cause probs when you have a coil

I would go back and get different AB's - I am allergic to a lot of them and I think many people are -

the AB's aren't Erythromycin by any chance are they?

no, penecillin V and metronidazole

it said the wee booklet thingy that stomach cramps and nausea were side effects

Where i work we never take routine swabs after a coil fitting for precisly this reason - they'll often show bacterial growth and then you're stuck wondering if it's a "true" infection or not as loads of women have groub B strep & unless you're pregnant it's not normally a problem.

Unless you have sypmtoms of infection (discharge, pelvic pain, fever) I'd say you may well not need the antibiotics, especailly the metronidazole as that doesn't cover group B strep anyway.

oh thanks, that is exactly my thoughts too

i have to go back to gp this week or next, for routine coil check up, i suppose i should mention it to her that i havent taken the ab's

I too am like that when given metradianole, but it is a very good fast acting anti biotic.

I had group b strep whilst carrying the twins
