Am 6mths post partum and suffering with sweats, poor sleep (when DD does sleep) and although I have been Ebf the whole time and exercising am losing zero weight :(

I feel awful.

I have had no end of comments "you should be a rake by now!", "what on earth are you doing to have lost no weight?" And it's getting me down.

I have had bloodtests which show brain is making thyroxine but none in my body?? I have to have another set of tests in 3 wks and can then start medication.

Has anyone got any experience of this? Will it take a long time for medication to work? Will I (please) start to lose some weight when I do? Thanks

It is your thyroid gland that produces thyroxine so if yours isn't doing that then you probably have an underactive thyroid.

A friend of mine had a similar problem which was discovered after the birth of her daughter. She went on the medication but said it took over a year of trying different levels before they got it right and she felt completely normal (sorry). Are you feeling really exhausted all the time? My friend said she didn't realise at the time that this was down to the thyroid as it was er first baby and she knew no different.

My mum has just had her thyroid removed due to cancer so is suffering similar problems with getting the medication levels right. Things seem to be improving though so fingers crossed they are nearly there!

Thanks! I think I meant gland not brain!

I am VERY tired, exhausted, achey and just generally not me :(

I really struggle to sleep even though I'm shattered all the time. I think I've left it this long for the same reason-i thought it was normal with a new baby!

I had this. Your symptoms sound worse than mine - I put on weight and got mildly depressed and was tired, but all those symptoms were easily ascribable to other things going on in my life at the time, iyswim, so I didn't associate them with my thyroid until I went for tests to find out why I wasn't getting pregnant again. I was lucky and my doctor got my medication levels right straight away, though they have been steadily increasing since then. In my experience, an underactive thyroid is easy to diagnose and fairly easy to rectify, but from reading threads on this on the health board, I seem to be in the minority. It may be relevant that I am not treated in the NHS. Good luck with getting the help you need and feeling better soon.

Ps it takes one month for the medication to start to work, or rather for tests to be able to show how the medication is working.
