ds (23) has broken both of his heel bones - HELP

NormaStanleyFletcher · 06/06/2012 22:26

He lives with his grandparents (my parents) at the mo - his choice

he had a temporary cast on one foot until today, but has now been sent home with no casts and told to stay in bed for 4 weeks. If he walks on them he will have long term problems. Ibuprofen and cocodomel given.

Off you go

He is crying with the restrictions and the pain.

Any ideas or advice (unless you are my SIL who just thinks he is an entitled little shit)

We need to know how he managed to break both his heal bones. (Is his name Achilleus?)

Poor lad. Sounds awful. Sporting accident? Does he have a wheelchair to get around?

NormaStanleyFletcher · 06/06/2012 22:33

No wheelchair. Just stay in bed.

He jumped off a wall.

Stupid effer

They should have let him borrow a wheelchair!

NormaStanleyFletcher · 06/06/2012 22:40

I agree

Will send on that advice.

My mum is not backwards about coming forwards

I have promised to send her a link to this.

They might have some narrow folding ones he can use inside the house. If he can camp out downstairs (if there is a loo downstairs) might even be better. It sounds horrid.

QuintessentialShadows · 06/06/2012 22:43

You can get one from here for less than £60, I am sure he can donate it to somewhere afterwards....

NormaStanleyFletcher · 06/06/2012 22:44

He currently lives in their ... erm... extension.

Mums studio downstairs, his bedroom / living area upstairs with his computer, telly etc etc etc.

if he has to live downstairs, he may kill my father (so would I)

I need to think about this

Is there any reason he's been told to stay in bed? 4 weeks bed rest is not really that good for someone.
You can borrow wheelchairs from the Red Cross. Could he get into the loo with a chair or has he a bottle / bed pan? You can borrow commodes from the Red Cross too.
If he's non weight bearing for 4 weeks an OT assessment would have been a food idea to ensure he can manage day to day.

NormaStanleyFletcher · 06/06/2012 23:00

He has been told to be on weight bearing I think

Mum?

He probably should have an assessment. Especially as he is living with my mum who has parkinsons, and my dad who is --useless- my dad

I must own up to being NSF'S mum. (Hi, NSF)

Grandson currently more cheerful after visit from local lads carrying 4 packs of liquid refreshment. (how does this go with ibrprophen & co-codamol?)

I'll attept to get a wheelchair, and also contact the fracture clinic for clearer advice on what he can & cannot do, and while i am at it, ask why it is going to heah up more quickly without a plaster to keep the break immobilised.

thanks for the advice

LadySybildeChocolate · 06/06/2012 23:20

My father did this. He slept on the sofa, and got to the downstairs loo by riding my brother's batman bike. He said the pain was horrid. Sad

Arnica from the healthfood shop promotes healing. Smile

NormaStanleyFletcher · 06/06/2012 23:23

Hello mum Grin

How will the wheelchair help him with living up some stairs though?

Sorry he is being your burden rather than mine Sad

Its OK dort, he is better this morning, and wants to leav Things as they are for today. He is going to try to contact someone at the jobcentre who can arrange some courses for him to do while unableto work (bar managers certificate, construction safety cert. food handling cert etc) They have been of little help so far..........

acebaby · 07/06/2012 10:06

The red cross will be able to lend him a wheelchair. You don't need to be referred (got one through them for ds1 when he broke his leg). Hope he feels better soon - sounds grim Sad

Reenypip · 07/06/2012 10:17

Hello, when I was 20 I broke both my heal bones (and my spine in 3 places and damaged spinal cord). Obviously I had other problems too, I was in hospital for 3 months, and was in ICU when first had accident.
They did an operation on one of the heals and left the other heal. I did have half a cast on for 7 days. Obviously I was in hospital and I couldn't walk anyway because of spinal injury.
Since then I've had the metal taken out of my left heal. My left side is the worst, and I'm waiting to have Botox in my left leg then put in plaster.

NormaStanleyFletcher · 07/06/2012 10:19

Bloody hell Reeny.

Hope you get sorted.

Hiya, that was 5 years ago. I'm still receiving treatment and have been through so much in the past 5 years!:-( meningitis, MRSA septacaemia, c. Diff etc, bowel and bladder problems, and these are all related to the spinal injury because of operations and nerve damaged etc.
I do have multiple other health problems too :-(

I hope they heal as soon as possible for him.

My heal fractures were 'open' and they said could see parts of the bone, and was possible had lost some parts of the heal bone.

Reenypip · 07/06/2012 10:31

Maybe ring fracture clinic for more advice. Did they give any follow up appointments?

Reenypip · 07/06/2012 10:33

(trauma clinic)

RandomMess · 07/06/2012 10:37

I just want to say ow ow ow, that must hurt so much.

I would look into alcohol being mixed with drugs - he doesn't want to knacker his liver as well.

Although alcohol and ibuprofen in early labour is damn good.
