hi my dd age 6 has had this flu type bug and was poorly, then she was ok..ish for a week, still very black circles around eyes and not eating very well.

went back to school monday and tuesday....however got the dreaded call from school to come and fetch her as she is so poorly....she says she has a poorly tummy and headache, temp is 38.5.

she is rapidly losing weight and she was stick thin before all of this, now when she is undressed its like looking at someone with bad anorexia! it breaks my heart.

does any one know the average weight of a child this age, or any tips.

we are booked in at gp again for today, but last time he said it was just a virus!!

Can you weigh her and look in your red book you had for her as a baby to see which centile she is on. This will give a more accurate reading of how heavy she is as all children are different sizes, there isn't really an average. Hope this makes sense and the doc will help a bit.

Does she usually eat ok.

DD1 (5)eats like a horse when she's not ill, but is only 25centile for her weight and 75centile for her height. It is just that she has a high metabolism I think as both DH and I were skinny kids. She only needs to be sick or off her food for a day or two and she looks like a famine victim.

The flu thing take a long time to get over, give her lots of rest and try tempting her with little amounts of comfort food often. If she is having trouble keeping food down I swear by flat cola, DD's have been known to keep this down even when water is comming back up. Make sure she is getting plenty of fluids.

TBH I bet Dr says it is a virus again but I know how scary it is when you see your baby in this state. Hope she is feeling better soon.

Ice cream? If you buy organic decent stuff it's not actually that bad for her. Poor thing. And egg would be good for some protein, worth a try.

She'll put it back on when she's better, I bet. My 2yo dd just lost loads when she was ill but it's all back on now she's better. Banana's a good idea too, could you mix it with ice cream?

I think she weighs about 2.5 stone (she is 6 and tall)

my dd weighs 2 stone, that was last week though, she is not a great eater.

the school have just done an healthy eating class and rightly so told the kids what was bad for them....however, they was saying things like butter, fat, crisps, sweets, chips, etc.....she now will not eat any of these things as "its bad for you", yes they are if tons of them are being eaten, but a little isnt to bad...is it. i do moniter theses foods when she used to eat them. she eats tons of fruit and loves her vegetebles, so in that way she is very good.

will see what gp says.....thanks everyone.

ds1 was like this for a long time. MIL says dh was the same, so she tried to stuff him up with food but all he got was a pot-belly! I think it all works out in the end. Dh is now the thinnest of his brothers and has the lowest cholesterol levels. And he's quite healthy!

Arghhh at the healthy eating thing.

I have a personal bug bear about this. Children need fat and sugar in their diets the problems come when it comes in the form of processed junk, there is no portion control and the kids get insufficient exercise.

DD1 came home the other day saying she was only having yoghurt for pudding at school cos she was on a diet. See previous post re her weight. I am actively encouraging her to have the stodgy pudding and custard. Rant over

I got sick of dd1 only eating fruit and veg

would have much rather she ate a huge bowl of treacle sponge and custard than a plate of brocolli

my dd gets tons of exercise....dance school, drama, trampoline, gymnastics...she has an athletic build.

ok to teach kids about junk but to the right kids really......more about exercise is needed i think.

Someone has recommended Floradix Kindervital for dd as she is still rather weak and tired after her bout of flu. Haven't got around to buying yet though
