High temperature question

HI guys

Ds is teething. Is asleep at the moment and doing a bit of moaning...but thats all...Ive just taken his temperature and its 39.5 on a thermoscan...higher than Ive ever seen it....but hes sleeping!! Im worried....should I wake him and give him calpol or let him sleep or what?

Strip his covers off and turn the heating down and maybe open the window a crack to lower the temp in the room too.

strip him off as much as you can and hold lukewarm flannel to his forehead.

If you have a medicine syringe you could squeeze it in slowly.

How old is he and what is he wearing?

Recently rang NHS direct about DS when he had a bug and temperatures of around 40. She said to keep an eye on him through the evening, keep him cool in minimum clothing/bedding and to use calpol etc. to bring his temperature down if it did get that high, even if it meant waking him.

I would also try to get some Calpol down him and if you lift his head he might stir enough to open his mouth for half a tsp at a time. Shame to wake him but a temp that high does need dealing with. Stripping them off usually helps.

39.5 is a pretty high temp. has he been OK today otherwise?

Its now 39...no other signs of any illness....other than drooling and pulling his mouth when he's awake...he's snoring now....Ive opened a window and pulled his bedding off.....will hold off for a little while with the calpol seeing as its gone down a bit.....Thanks so much for all your responses.

After all we said about keeping him cool, you have to be careful not to let him get cold though - when his temp comes down cover him with a light sheet. Doc at hosp told me that after DS was ill.

Nice conflicting advice as usual but I thought I'd better mention it.

Hope he's better soon and you get some sleep too.
