I am at the end of my tether atm. It all started 4 months ago with a root canal in a tooth, that was still agonisingly painful so in desperation I had the tooth pulled out. Lots of pain followed, and it transpires that that the root of the tooth was in my sinus cavity, which has broken through and I now have a connection ie a hole through my gum through to my sinus's. They hoped it would heal itself but 3 sinus infections later (which involved massive amounts of pus coming out the gum) it's still there. Been referred to hospital to have the sinus wall repaired and x rays show the dentist left the base of a root inside my gum.
A few few weeks ago I noticed a strange heavy feeling in my gums above the molars in the opposite side of my face, a feeling of vague toothache then not long after horrendous toothache in those 2 molars and pain around my upper and lower jaw. I also have a non stop headache. Been back to the dentist who can't find anything wrong with the teeth and prescibed Metronidazone ab's. No change. Went to the doctor who diagnosed facial neuralgia and has prescribed Tegretol been on it for a week with no change. Back to the hospital specialist who has prescribed another lot of ab's penicillin this time.
I am confused and feel so ill I can hardly move, I wake up with the pain maneagable but around 3pm it is like my mouth is on fire and it subsides a little in the evening until I go to sleep then it goes.
Can anyone identify with this or what it could be and give me some hope that there's light at the end of the tunnel as I am feeling desperate.

Oh poor you. I have suffered form tooth probs in the past and also sinusitus so can only imagine the pain you are in.

I have no advice really apart from maybe suggesting a second opinion (maybe even private for the initial consultation then switch to nhs after) and maybe ask for a referal to the pain clinic who will advise you best on pain management until things are sorted out.

ledkr · 31/05/2012 19:57

sinusitis is usually more severe during the day,i think its to do with the pressure building as you are upright.

ledkr · 31/05/2012 19:57

What painkillers are you taking?

mumface · 31/05/2012 20:40

I am on Ibuprofen all day and take co-codamol aswell in the afternoon when it gets bad.

well the first thing id do is get some decent pain relief. If your co codamol is from the chemist then it will be fairly mild and your gp can certainly prescribe you something stronger and more effective. Please go tomorrow. You can take ibruprofen and co codamol together as well.

Ask to see another specialist?

latrucha · 31/05/2012 21:09

I really don't know but what you wrote reminds me alot of my friend who has just been diagnosed with this.

She is being treated with epilepsy drugs as the doctors say painkillers are actually incapable of dealing with the type of pain it is. Is it worth raising with your GP?

Dollydowser · 31/05/2012 21:16

I can recommend acupuncture for the pain. I hope you find some relief soon.

Tranquilidade · 31/05/2012 21:17

Mumface, has anybody checked your jaw? I had excruciating pain for 4 months, didn't respond to Tegretol (which more or less rules out neuralgia). I changed dentists and my new one found a problem with my tmj so sent me to a maxillofacial consultant who confirmed it. In my case it was causing muscles to spasm, effectively giving me cramp in my jaw and pressing on nerves. Sadly my previous crap dentist had, over several years, removed 4 teeth thinking I had toothache, bone probs, etc before this was found. Apparently that is very common.

Google tmj (temperomandibular joint) pain and referred pain patterns. Feel free to pm me if you want to know more.

SpringHeeledJack · 31/05/2012 21:29

I had similar to this, mumface- but without the sinuses- and similar to you, Tranq

after untold extractions over about three years, useless courses of abs etc etc, I got diagnosed with tmj disorder also

I don't get it all the time- but do get episodes which knock me out for a week at least- usually a fortnight. I haven't resolved it anything like satisfactorily- the hosp consultant "blamed" me for grinding my teeth, gave me a splint and discharged me. It hasn't worked. I am not at all convinced about this theory -I think it was crap dentistry wot done it. And I find dentists stick together on this sort of thing- there's like a spooky dental Code Of Silence or something. Like the masons, but with latex gloves Grin

Really really wish you luck.

mumface · 31/05/2012 22:00

Yes, the facial and jaw pain does sound rather like TMJ, I wasn't diagnosed with it but the consultant at the hospital who is a maxofacial specialist gave me a leaflet about it and told me to do some of the exercises on it to help my jaw pain although he never said I actually had TMJ. Has anyone had any luck with those? What is really killing me is the pain in my back teeth can TMJ cause toothache? I have such a mix of symptoms maybe I maybe have more than one problem. I had a brief thought about trying acupuncture today, I am also have Olbas oil steam inhalations.

SpringHeeledJack · 31/05/2012 22:21

TMJ does indeed cause toothache, imo- tho as the pain sort of spreads out I'd describe it more as teethache

do let us know if you try the acupuncture route as I'm too chicken to do it myself

I'm currently doing magnesium spray, which seems a bit snake oil-y tbh- also heat packs, steam, massage, meditation- oh, and a bag of frozen sweetcorn when the mood takes me

thinking about it, though, if someone said you had to lie on a pool table for three hours a day in your birthday suit and a pair of wellies, I'd probly try it

I'D TRY ANYTHING

[desperate]
