I've had ear pain and a sore throat since the beginning of december. 've been given 2 lots of antibiotics by the GP which had no effect, drops and sudafed have made no difference either. The ENT consultant that i'm now seeing gave me more drops and exercises to do and they haven't worked either. I am now due to go into hospital on wednesday to have a gromet inserted in my ear.

Good idea or bad idea do you think?
I agreed to the surgery as the consultant seems like a very nice man who know shis stuff, he suggested it would work and i'm really fed up of the pain. But now I'm thinking is it the right thing to do??

do you know does it affect anything he does?
Does he scuba dive by any chance do you know? Or swim much?
Im just only now thinking of all the questions I should have asked the consultant last week!

thanks aimsmum. I've decided to postpone at least until I've tried some other possible remedies. Going to try cranial osteopathy on friday and see if that can help.

My mum had them put into one ear, mckenzie, when she was 62.

do you know what the problem was in your mums ear Expat? Has she had any problems at all with the grommet?

mckenzie
one ear was permanently blocked in my mum. she has allergies and awful sinus problems, and she several infections and then her ear just stayed blocked up like she had cotton wool in it. which was not good b/c years ago, when she had measles as a youngster, she lost some hearing in it - so she was effectively deafened in it when it stayed blocked.

she's not had a problem since having teh gromet in.

thanks Expat. That's good to hear.

Hi
just to say I went to see an ENT consultant a couple of years ago because I had had many sinus problems etc and was finding my hearing in my left ear was getting worse. He decided I had (probably) glue ear and wanted me to have a grommet fitted, under local anaesthetic(sp?). To be honest I freaked out a bit and decided not to go ahead, I am a total wuss. I have just put up with it, so let me know if you find any alternatives that work, Good luck.

I need a grommet

am deaf in both ears and it is seriously affecting my work (has lasted since flu three weeks ago)

I'd have them like a shot

kate
my mum had hers done under local anaesthetic and is really pleased. honestly, her allergies and sinus are hell. she truly could no longer hear, especially given the damage she suffered as a child from high fever.

mckenzie · 22/02/2006 14:17

I dont think my hearing is affected at all. I'm just in constant pain in my ear and in my throat when i swallow.
My consultant said it would be a general anaesthetic and yet, katetee and expat, your experiences have both been with local. That seems strange but then he did say he was going to look at my eustacian tube at the same time so maybe that explains that.
I've got a cranial osteopathy appt booked for friday morning. Fingers crossed this will work as it's really starting to get me down.
