Has anyone experienced this? Its quite embarrassing and upsetting really for poor DD. She said she had seen bits of skin in her number 2's which at the time did not think anything about, later when she went to bed she complained her "tuppy" was sore and itchy, when I had a look there were little bits of what I can only describe as threads around the area. I wasn't sure if this was worms but wondered if anyone else knew anything about them.

Have been at work today but am going to see how she is tonight when I get home and then take her to the docs tomorrow.

Thanks if advance and sorry if tmi.

Yup it's pretty grim. When DS had threadworm you could see them at night wriggling around his bum. Really repulsive infact. V. easy to get rid of with meds. - can buy over the counter if necessary - but all the family needs treatment and you need to be rigourous about hygiene - handwashing after loo, cutting fingernails etc for a few wks. My DS sucks his thumb and reinfected himself. Now it'sall gone but apparently it's rife in schools - should see his school loos - poss. more revolting than trhreadworm!

Kidstrack2 · 20/02/2006 16:28

Yep first hand expeirence when ds started school, go to chemist and get a prescription its very infectious(easy to pass on to other members of the family) if you leave her tonight she will be up during the night feeling a very itchy bottom and no sleep

crazydazy · 20/02/2006 16:32

Can you buy the medication over the counter? Can't take her to the docs today as they have only take emergencies at this time of day.

Uggghhhhhh Earthsmum. DD really hates going to the toilets at school as she says they are smelly. She is very particular about things like that, more than DS who will pee anywhere.

You can buy it at the chemist without prescription - the whole family has to take it and again in a couple of weeks when the eggs start hatching again.

cupcakes · 20/02/2006 16:34

Do it today - it can be unbearable at night.

crazydazy · 20/02/2006 16:39

Should I not get the doctor to confirm it is worms first though, as I have never seen it I wasn't sure? Did not see anything wriggling around and when I put some sudacreme on she went to sleep with no problems

If she's itching loads, it could be dry skin there, from too much wiping. But most likely, it's worms.

We've had them, they do seem to be endemic. What I do to check is, if DS1 complains about itching, then I try to check his bottom area asap for anything moving. The itching normally means the worms are out laying eggs iyswim. They look like very small white/translucent moving threads.

NotQuiteCockney · 20/02/2006 16:42

Oh, and the docs probably won't be able to check? Dunno. They might be able to do something with a stool sample, I guess.

noknickers · 20/02/2006 16:45

ds2 has it aagain

crazydazy · 20/02/2006 16:46

I would say it looked more like flaky skin and the area was more sore she said than itchy and it wasn't her bottom but more to the front iyswim?

Will check it again tonight don't really want to give her medication if its only dry skin which it might be.

doctor doesn't need to confirm, if you go to pharmacy and explain dd symtoms they will give you something over the counter

Check her bum at night, the worms vome out at night.

You could also 'inspect' a turd. you see the little buggers in them....a hairly turd that waves back!

The Dr will need a stool sample to check for worms, so you would be given a specimen bottle and have to go away, wait for 'business' to be done, then take it back for testing etc, etc. Tbh, I wouldn't bother if you have seen them. You can buy Ovex over the family and Pripsen for under twos. Treat the whole family and follow a strict hygiene routine for a few weeks after as the eggs can live for a good while on bedding, carpets etc. Will find an info link for you. Here.

Dd suffered terribly with this last year and in little girls they can travel into the vagina which is extremely uncomfortable, so if you can get to the pharmacy today at all, it would be better.

Aero · 20/02/2006 16:59

Incidently, the treatment won't do any harm (afaik) if it isn't worms, but if it is, the sooner it starts to kill the blighters off the better. If it is worms, you might find she is inconsolable at night when the itching for dd was intense.

crazydazy · 20/02/2006 17:02

Oh my god the poor little mite she has complained for a couple of nights that she was sore but just thought she wasn't wiping properly as she sometimes forgets and only saw the flaky bits last night.

Right thanks everyone, will go and buy some. Will one bottle treat the four of us or do we need a bottle each?

OP posts:
Kidstrack2 · 20/02/2006 17:05

you could get a tablet each for adults and a bottle of suspension for kids

crazydazy · 20/02/2006 17:08

She hasn't been crying and believe she worries over every little thing but she just says she is sore. Am going to get the medication anyway.

I can't believe she has got them....first the nits and I got shut of them now these horrible things!!!

OP posts:
NotQuiteCockney · 20/02/2006 17:09

Oh, you're not a real parent until you've dealt with both nits and worms! (I quite enjoy telling parents of little ones that nits and worms are endemic, and they should get used to the idea, and watch out for them ...)

QE2 · 20/02/2006 17:12

ds2 had worms a couple of weeks ago. He was beside himself with the intense itching. I have sympathy for your dd.

Either get a prescription from the docs or get stuff over the counter - enough for all the family. it might take a couple of nights for your dd to get some relief from the itching - I found ds got some relief from a warm bath and plenty of sudocrem round his bum.

Aero · 20/02/2006 17:48

Ovex is available as a family pack of four tablets - fairly innocuous to take and I think it might be available as a liquid too. There are probably other treatments around as well. Good luck - poor wee pet - she has my sympathy too.
