If someone presentented to you with sudden onset loss of right sided peripheral vision that lasted about 10 minutes followed by right hand numbness a right tongue numbness lasting no more than a minute what would you think?? BP 2 hours after was 132/85 usually 120/60

Usually fit & healthy. 32yrs, no medication except the pill that was started 3weeks ago. not over weight, non smoker.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I'm not a doctor, but it could well be a painless migraine

Theas18 · 29/05/2012 12:26

Blunt answer I'd think they should be talking to their own GP (? ask for a phone consultation) rather than posting on 'tinterweb where they can get any sort of unregulated advice from anyone.

Sparklingbrook · 29/05/2012 12:26

Sounds like a migraine.

Sparklingbrook · 29/05/2012 12:27

Sorry, I'm not a Doctor. But have experienced numbness with migraines, also seeing half of things is the first signal |I am about to have one.

diddlybop · 29/05/2012 12:28

Blunt reply Theas18 they already have and were told it was a "funny turn" whatever that may be & perhaps the unregulated advice is sometimes more helpful.

I didn't know you could get painless migraines!

I would think a chat with the Dr would be good, especially if just started on the pill, they don't like migraines and the pill. Well my Dr doesn't.

MoaningMicroraptorRoarsAgain · 29/05/2012 12:37

I would think most likely migraine.

But the pill is also a risk factor for stroke, if it was me I would expect to be investigated to rule out a TIA, and taken off the pill immediately.

MoaningMicroraptorRoarsAgain · 29/05/2012 12:38

Just to clarify - if investigation was not offered I would insist on tests to rule out TIA. Not a doctor but currently non practising HCP.

DoingItForMyself · 29/05/2012 12:48

I had similar a few weeks after starting the pill when I was a student. Home visit (late evening) and Dr didn't even ask if I was on it - I hadn't registered any connection, but my darling dad asked me and we put it down to that. Stopped taking it shortly afterwards. Could raised BP be down to worrying about it?

diddlybop · 29/05/2012 13:01

I thought the raised bp was caused by it, not the cause! I could feel myself going into a panic attack! I might look into the whole pill thing!

Check out scintillating scotoma - it's like a visual migraine - where part of your field of vision goes blurry/shimmery. basically a migraine without the headache. Can leave you feeling quite weird.

Sparklingbrook · 29/05/2012 13:05

That sounds like mine lady. i can't read because the letters jump about and sometimes I can't get my words out. It doesn't last long and I maybe get one a year if that.

Theas18 · 29/05/2012 14:33

sounds like a migranous thing then. The change of BP isn't significant. The pill may be and should be taken seriously. Risk benefit balance etc but noone really "has " to have oestrogen containing contraception when there are (I'd say better, safer...) options around.

I've had 2 episodes of scintillating scotoma personally and it is very interesting, especially when you know what it is and start mapping the visual field defect.

Sorry you didn't say in the OP you have talked to the GP

AnyoneforTurps · 29/05/2012 17:32

Are you worrying about a TIA (mini-stroke)? That is unlikely because they don't usually cause a loss of peripheral vision (they can cause other visual loss but not usually peripheral). Also, for your eye, tongue and right-side all to be affected, a large part of the brain would need to be involved which is very unlikely with such a quick recovery.

However, I agree with those above who think you should come off your pill if it's the combined one as it may have provoked the migraine (the most likely diagnosis). And, fabulous as MN is Smile, it is no substitute for actually seeing a doctor. If you feel the first one didn't take you seriously, make an appointment with a different GP at the practice - you can use the pill as an excuse if you don't want to say that you were unhappy with the 1st GP.

Turps (GP)

diddlybop · 29/05/2012 20:55

Thanks Turps I was perfectly happy with the "its not a TIA" I just wanted to know what else it could be. That was the bit that my GP seemed to loose himself on! I was thinking about the coil anyway so will make an appointment!
