Does anyone know if it's ok to have an x ray? I am in Dubai and have to have a medical for my visa tomorrow and am feeding my two week old baby. Thanks a lot.

found this -

Experts agree X-rays ? even a chest X-ray or a mammogram ? are safe for breastfeeding women to undergo. This extends to the X-ray machines used in airports for security purposes.

Hope that helps.

X rays whilst breast feeding are ok, You will not absorb and pass on radiation, yous imply absorb a small amount which dissapates, you will not be left radioactive. I am exposed to x rays at work and can breast feed safely according to health and saftey regulations
If you are of child bearing age, you should make sure they cover your ovaries with a lead sheild

sorry for hijack, but chaps mum, I had quite a few x rays of my pelvis age 13 and so had no lead shield. Do you know if this could have damaged my ovaries or eggs at all?

jellyjelly · 20/02/2006 15:51

I would like to know too as i am having weekly xray and the last 2 i have had to ask for the shields

ruty, a few wont have done much harm, infact you are prob exposed to more radiation in a long haul flight.

Before an abdominal x ray is done on a woman of childbearing age, or indeed a pregnant woman. the dr must decide that the information provided by the x ray whill outweigh the potential risk of the X ray. The risk of an abdo x ray to a woman is minimum.

I think that chest X rays use slightly more radiation than abod x rays which is why extra precautions should be taken.

I myself have had several scans and abdo xrays. The dose of radiation is the minimum it must be for the x ray to be clear.
I have had no probelms with my ovaries.

Sorry didnt mean to alarm you but it is worth while for all women to consider asking for lead protedtion when having a chest x ray. The x ray need only show your chest therfore there is no need to expose your ovaries unnessisaraly.

thanks chaps mum - i thought chest x rays were a bit less than pelvic tho. I was a bit worried about subtle damage but hoping all will be well.

I had a chest x-ray when I was 20 weeks pregnant and they used a massive lead shield - it took 2 members of staff to move it. dd turned out fine!
