since Friday my 12 and 15 year old have been very off colour. Thought at first it was just the warm weather. But they are still not sleeping and they ave raging temperatures with no appetite. Eldest has a GCSE tomorrow. Just wondered if anyone knows if this is something going around and how long it lasts? Thanks.....

Don't have a medical answer but if your eldest has a temperature (wish I'd seen this before 3:30pm!) you can contact the Examinations Officer and they can do one of two things: 1) with appropriate evidence (Drs note) could say they are too ill to do the exam... I think the Dr would have to state that explicitly; 2) with appropriate evidence (Drs note again) apply for special consideration. Special consideration means the DC sits the exam (potentially in a separate room, with rest breaks in fresh air* etc.) and the exam board takes into account their illness when marking the paper.

Hope some of this helps! :)

*This depends on your school's arrangements/experience. I work at a school where SEN students are in a separate room with extra staff so it's easy to let ill students sit with them and we have the staff to let them walk outside for a bit/watch them closely in case they get worse. Smaller room also helps as it's less daunting if you're stressed, ill and tired.
