DD'S TONSILITIS DOESN'T SEEM TO GO AWAY...

Took dd to GP 10 days ago because she was a bit poorly. Turns out she had tonsilitis ('lovely' marbles in her throat!) and a viral rash of some sort. So GP put her on antibiotics which she took no problems.

Yesterday we were at a kiddies party and 1/2 way through she flagged and wanted to go home. Unheard of from her when bouncy castles, music and pass the parcel are involved! Got home and she slept like a stone.

Checked her throat tonight as she seemed run down again today and lone behold... still swollen at the back.

Anybody on here know how long it takes for tonsils to calm down with a course of antibiotics? Surely it should have gone by now?

Am planning on taking her to the GP tomorrow, just wondering whether I'm being overcautious or the like...

Any input/experience welcome.

probably should add... she's 4yo
oh and never at all complained about a sore throat and actually eating better than ever! Go figure! [puzzled emoticon]

there are two possibilites here, one is that the throat infection is viral and therefor will not respond to antibiotics, or she was on the wrong antibiotics.
Sorry to interrogat but how old is your dd and did the rash start before or after the antibiotics. Which antibugs was she on bythe way??

edodgy · 19/02/2006 20:44

I was like this when I had glandular fever, sore throat, tiredness and viral rash are all symptoms of this as well as swollen glands, Antibiotics wont work on a sore throat that is due to glandular fever so could be possible this is what she has.Maybe you could ask for her to be tested for this.

MrsBigD · 19/02/2006 20:46

chaps mum... dd is 4
the rash appeared before the antibiotics. I originally took her to the GP because I thought she was in the early throws of chickenpox which was going round at nursery. So I was very surprised when he told me about the tonsilitis

Think she was on liquid amoxicylin (orange stuff)

exactly what I was thinking, if you are commenced on ampicillin (amoxil) it will actually make the rash of someone with gf worse...
Although it could just be viral.. allot of viruss have cyclical propeties, ie the symptoms will subside and then come back.
She is a bit young for gf.
If the gp is still suspicious of tonsilitis he should prob take a throat swab to see what bugs are there. If shes not having any other symproms you could discuss with him the need for antibiotic untill the swab comes back.

MrsBigD · 19/02/2006 20:53

cheers cm... a throat swap... oh boy that's going to be a drama... she's such a drama queen at times. You should have heard her when she got her mumps injection... I'm sure everybody in the surgery thougth she was being subjected to the most horrible form or torture!

They might just sit on it for a while...

You'l be hoping its the last time her tonsils are tickled for a while...

Sorry that was a poor excuse for a joke!

Let me know how you get on if yu dont mind?

bramblina · 19/02/2006 21:27

I second the opinion of glandular fever, exactly my symptoms and anti-b's cannot treat a virus. There was a discussion about this on Thismorning last week and hope I don't worry you but in one case it turned in to chronic fatigu syndrome/ME so don't give in if the doc fobs you off, have blood tests to make sure. Hope it's not GF.

bramblina · 19/02/2006 21:27

Fatigue even

MrsBigD · 19/02/2006 22:40

cm will keep you posted

brambelina... I'm not the type to be fobbed off just hoping I'm not getting an appointment with one particular GP in the surgery... he's the fobbing type...

if it's GF where the h*ll would she have picked that up!? I thought that was the Universities kissing disease?

Who knows?? It's transmitted (?) by saliva. No idea where I got it either. Could have been a dirty drinking glass or anything simple like that. People can carry it but never develop it, I had it for 6 months and my DH never showed any signs of it. Just keep an eye out.

MrsBigD · 20/02/2006 07:05

saliva... ah well saliva as a culprit would be feasible... he loves giving kisses with mouth wide open

Update...

according to GP dd's tonsiles are big but look healthy. Alledgedly tonsils in small children are bigger anyhow in proportion and as she's had an infection it'll take a while for them to go down.

Was told to keep an eye on her and
if she takes a turn to the worse, i.e. fever, lack of appetite or energy etc. go
back. So I'll probably be back there within a week or so... shall see how dd will be once nursery starts again tomorrow...

great news, hope she continues to get better!

MrsBigD · 20/02/2006 10:38

thanks cm... so do I... it's very disconcerting when a lo who generally makes the energiser bunny look lame slows down so much.

Speedy recovery for her.
