Up your fluid intake too!

Thank you! Any liquids in particular?

Water is best, if senna doesn't work go to pharmacist and try and get something stronger, it's horrible feeling like that :)

Have you been taking / taken codeine for the post-op pain? Can be v bad for making you constipated.

waitingtobeamummy · 25/05/2012 21:02

Thanks both! I'm back at work Monday and I don't want to suddenly have to "go" I took cocodamol constantly before hand to manage the pain but I stopped on the day of the op. Do you think that'll be all out of ny system? Afterwards until a couple of days ago I was taking ibuprofen and Paracetamols. Do you think that would cause it??

If you're no longer taking codeine (in co-codamol), the constipation is more likely to be due to the surgery than the painkillers - ibuprofen & paracetamol don't usually cause it. It is totally normal to have constipation after any abdominal surgery - your bowel goes on strike temporarily. It will go back to normal but it can take weeks to do so.

I had my gallbladder removed eleven days ago and didn't poo until four days later, but have since been just about every day. I paid an unscheduled visit to A and E a couple of days after the operation (not related to my bowels, by the way), but the practitioner nurse did tell me that certain pain killers will cause constipation.

The visit to A and E was because of the pain I was in which felt just the same as my gallstone episodes (they thought that a gallstone had slipped into the bile duct) - but apart from that one episode I have not had to take anything at all for the pain, so that's probably why I am having no problems going to the loo. Practitioner nurse suggested senacot if I had any problems after taking the codeine which they gave me.

Good luck.

Glad to hear everything is ok now. I can't wait until I can drive again on Wednesday - I'm fed up of having to be driven everywhere. The "no lifting" thing for six weeks is a bit of a bummer, too. We look after my sixteen month old grandson and he is a ton weight - he can't understand why I can't pick him up.

Good luck for the future!

I too have had recent gall bladder surgery and am having a problem with constipation

hope2help · 31/05/2012 12:17

Constippation is a very common & serious problem and shouldn't be ignored, because it can lead to all sorts of bigger and very serious problems.
I was given this tip by a well wisher which I'd be happy to share with everyone.

In the morning, take a small glass of cold milk and squeeze half a lemon/lime in it. The milk will start to curdle, stir it and drink it immediately. The taste is not great but it's very cooling and will help with the bowl movement.
This tip works wonders with Heamorroids & Piles if repeated 3-5 mornings continuously.

Drink lots of warm water and avoid tea & coffe as much as possible. Tea and coffee are very dehydrating.

Give it a go, it really works. All the Best.

Thanks both, and thanks for the warm water tip, although I think I would retch with the curdled milk but if lactulose stops working I will be trying it!
