Dizziness and spinning

Im on holiday and should be really relaxed as having a wonderful time. The second day I woke up after having a few drinks and could not get out of bed as my head was spinning so much. I felt like I was going to be tipped out of bed. I managed to get out eventually but felt dizzy most of te day.

The same happened yesterday so I went to local docs. She took my blood pressure and said it was really low and that I probably had a virus.

I feel ok in the day but when I sit for a long time or lie down I get it again.
I'm feeling quite emotional about it as its such a strange thing to happen out of the blue. I should be having a great time but can't quite get into it as something does not feel right.
Has anyone else experienced this? And what did you do?

You poor thing. My brother had something similar a couple of years ago. It was Labyrinthitis which is to do with the inner ear. He described it as feeling as though he was inside a spin dryer. It went off after a while but it was horrible while it lasted. It could well be a virus (not sure if labyrinthitis is a virus? Think it might be). Low blood pressure on its own can also make you feel v dizzy/lightheaded. Are you on holiday in the UK? Did the doctor recommend anything to ease the symptom?

doinmummy · 22/05/2012 22:51

Was going to suggest Labyrinthitis too.

You poor thing.

I dont know hoe it's treated though. Hope you feel better soon.

I had this earlier in the year, had to be stretchered home from the swimming pool - I was staggering about as if drunk, the room was spinning violently. I thought I was having a stroke! Medics diagnosed Labyrinthitis here, too. It lasted quite a few days, getting a little better then coming on again. I couldn't do much other than sit quite still in bed.

It returned a few weeks later but only for a couple of days. It's very nasty while it lasts but 'not as serious as it feels' so I was told !

There were a couple of support threads on here if you search for Labyrinthitis. I found them very reassuring and helpful as it was quite upsetting.

Hope you feel better soon, bless you. It's nasty. Unfair for it to come on during your holiday, too.

Forgot to say that yes, it can be viral and if so it may go off and never return. Not much in the way of treatment, I took travel sickness pills (Stugeron) and Buccastem (prescribed) but neither made a whole lot of difference, really, and only address the nausea associated with the spinning feeling.

Thanks for your replies. I'm on holiday in the uk but in a v remote place so the doc is miles away.

She checked my ears and said they were fine.

I can't believe this has happened. It was a much needed holiday and it's ruined it a bit. We have a hot tub which I am dying to go I to but can't.

I'll look at the condition that you mention. I'm not really feeling sick although do t have much of an appetite.

Feeling v anxious though.

It sounds like vertigo which I get very frequently especially when I am over tired and I usually take it on holiday also as when I seem to relax once I get off from work it hits me full wack!!
I have gotten tablets from the Dr which has helped some times I haven't been bothered with the vertigo for years but this year its been relentless. The Dr seemed to think that because I kept getting it after the cold the problem developed because of very fine debris becoming detached in my inner ear that this has been the cause of my vertigo...
I think you definitely need a trip to your Dr when you get home from holiday hope you get sorted.....

marilynmonroe · 23/05/2012 16:25

Do you think it could be anemia?

Sounds just like labyrinthitis...

ladyinthelibrary · 24/05/2012 10:48

Or, something similar to Labyrinthitis, a milder thing called benign paroxysmal vertigo, where debris in the inner ear causes disturbance. Lying flat may help. If you have internet access, you can google a procedure which is supposed to clear the debris - lying flat, turning your head in various positions. Hope it clears soon and you can enjoy your holiday!

marilynmonroe · 24/05/2012 19:49

I don't think it is as its worse when I lie down and move my head around. When I get up in the morning it takes a few attempts and I can't sit in the car for long as when I get up I feel dizzy.

Once I'm up I'm usually fine apart from occasional dizzy spell.

Holiday has not been ruined but still could have done without this. Just want it to go away.

Omg it sounds like something that's just hit me. Had a pretty stressful few weeks (still ongoing) and dc2 not sleeping through (20 months!!( and everytime I lie down or move head the room spins. I don't drink. I was thinking its anemia or low blood pressure.

BellaVita · 24/05/2012 20:43

A colleague at work is just getting over labyrinthitis - she has been really shocking with it and off work for 4 weeks. She as come back on reduced hours until she is fully better.

Hope you feel better soon.

Dr crab sounds v similar to my situation. Doc said I do have low Bp. Going to get it checked out properly at my own gps on Monday.

You should do the same. Hope things calm down for you. Let me know if you go to docs.

I have low Bp ordinarily. Even during my pregnancies. Will check on Monday. Grr!! Let me know how you get on too!!

marilynmonroe · 28/05/2012 10:13

Just been to docs for those who are interested and it seems I have benign positional vertigo. Should take a couple of more weeks to get rid off. Fingers crossed.
