I keep bruising. Worried.

I went to the docs today. For about three or so months I've had unexplained spontaneous bruising appear on my thighs, shins, backs of my knees and upper arms. They are all sporadic and individual, not clustered. They range in size from 5p to several 50ps. I have no recollection of bashing myself and they don't hurt. They fade and I forget then I'll wake with new ones. My boyfriend was worried as me too a degree but I put it off coz they don't hurt. Anyway I went to the gp tomorrow and she's requested an 'urgent' fbc for first thing tomorrow. All things are flying round my head. I genuinely didn't think much of them. I have a 2yr old who's always climbing all over me. I suffer nearly daily headaches and semi-frequent dizziness. I'm preparing myself for a referral to a haemotologist. I don't want to google, but do any of you have any ideas what may be causing them?

I'd say that, of every 100 patients I see with unexplained bruising:

90 have no cause found - we do tests, they all come back normal and the bruising just stops.

8 turn out to have a congenital (inborn) tendency to bruise more easily but nothing actually wrong with them. Some people are naturally more prone to bleed/bruise than others but this does not mean that they have any sort of illness.

2 have some sort of underlying illness causing bruising, of which there are about a squillion.

So I don't know what is causing your bruising but the odds are definitely on the side of it being nothing serious.

Thanks. Had my bloods done today and back to gp next Thursday to discuss results. 3 new ones have popped up on the inside of my forearm just this afternoon. Def not whacked myself there Confused

Hi first - if it was v serious they would have taken bloods on first appointment / you would have heard back today. Everything turps said!

I was exactly the same (and had the same concerns) but blood tests taken as a teen found no cause. I just seemed to bruise ridiculously easily. However, in my case it reduced dramatically when I was diagnosed with (and treated for) anaemia. I had other symptoms (including headaches, dizzyness, extreme tiredness, low mood) and it was probably only a few weeks into taking the iron tablets that I realised that I was already bruising far less. My guess is that I'd probably always been borderline anaemic, but not enough for them to flag it as a problem in those original blood tests.
