OK, how did I miss thrush?!

God, this is mortifying Blush (but then this is the lovely anonymous internet so hey, who really cares?)

So I went to the GP today to get a Mirena coil fitted and it turns out I have thrush. Pretty badly. But I swear I have no symptoms!! Well, none that I knew were thrush anyway - no itching, no discharge, so smell (should there be a smell?). I did find sex painful but tbf even though I had an emcs 4 months ago I thought that was just because I've had almost no sex for the past year. I've never had thrush before.

Anyway, you can imagine how great I felt to have the doctor point this out to me...

Has anyone else missed the symptoms? Or am I just now officially slightly manky?!

The first time I had it was in Feb after getting pneumonia and taking loads of antibiotics. Never had antibiotics before (well not since being a kid) never had thrush before. Spent at least three weeks itching and oozing before going to the GP all prepared to learn I had cancer of the lady bits. She looked at me like I'd failed my Ladyperson GCSE when I described my symptoms, said she wasn't going to bother examining me since she knew I'd been drugged up to the eyeballs with antibiotics a few weeks earlier and wrote me a prescription. Two days later all gone.

So I was the opposite of you, I had all the symptoms and no idea at all what thrush was. Live and learn.

We have loads of patients who don't know they have thrush - it is picked up when doing an examination or swabs for something else. Thrush that only affects the vagina (not the vulva) often causes no symptoms. So you are non-manky Smile

Oh, thank god, anyone, that's a relief to hear! I felt absolutely awful... is there anything I can look out for now I've had it once? (Let's be honest, with a LO its unlikely that I'll be having sex regularly enough to use that as an indicator!!)

Penelope - 'Ladyperson GCSE' - exactly how I felt! Grin

Honestly I wouldn't worry about it. We have millions of bugs living in every bodily crevice and thrush is just one more of them. If it doesn't cause any symptoms, it doesn't need treating (apart from in rare situations e.g patient on chemotherapy). If you get the symptoms PPP had, then get a thrush treatment from your pharmacist but otherwise don't worry.

Also loving the "lady person GCSE" Grin

I know this sounds pathetic but they are on my tongue, my gums and inside my lips. It hurts to talk, eat and is waking me up during the night. I'm gargling with salt water, have upped my vitamin intake and they just keep coming. This happens to me at least once every couple of months and they can last upto 2 weeks. What can I do?

Sorry meant to start a new thread am arse!

HuggyPomBear · 24/05/2012 20:43

lexiesgirl, another thing I would do to prevent reoccurrence is to get your DH/DP treated, otherwise you may just pass it back and forth between you. He can get canesten cream from over the counter and rub it on his glans....nice I know!

Lexiesgirl · 24/05/2012 21:16

Heh Grin - thanks Huggy, I'll get him some cream (there's no way he'll buy it himself!). It's all lovely, isn't?! "I'm sorry, darling, I think I might have given you thrush..."
