Hi, can anyone help?

I have a uti and have just got the lab report back
For white cell count mine is 718 ul. Normal is < 40. ul

However when I look it up on dr google the normal range is 4 to 11. So I must be misreading or misunderstanding the units.

Does anyone know lab speak? Thanks

The 2 figures are using different units.

hiveofbees · 18/05/2012 15:19

Are you sure both are measuring the same type of white cell? Have you looked here?

Sunshinenow · 18/05/2012 15:20

That is what I though (I think), but why would they use two sets of units on the same report.

Typing exactly as written on the print out

WBC count: 718 / ul (normal range

Sorry, I meant that the 4-11 range is not in uL

Sunshinenow · 18/05/2012 15:30

Ah I see what you mean:)

Does this mean 718 is high then? Compared to starting at 40 ul

Ul is microlitre, a thousandth of a ml ( millilitre) normal wbc is 4000 to 10000 per Cubic ml

larrygrylls · 18/05/2012 15:36

I think that is cubic mm, not ml...and I think that a cubic mm is the same as a microlitre, as a litre would be a cube of 10cm. So, that still leaves it as a little confusing! However, whatever units they are using, it looks as though yours is high, as would be consistent with a UTI.

Sunshinenow · 18/05/2012 15:52

Many thanks. Still a bit confused :)

Are there numbers for neutrophils, lymphocytes etc as well or just a general WBC?

Sunshinenow · 18/05/2012 18:33

Just a generic WBC. (sorry fell asleep earlier ).

4 - 11 is for white cell count in your blood, not your urine.

Sunshinenow · 18/05/2012 18:51

Thanks! Going a bit cross eyes looking at it. Of course it is.

Just a bit worried and not sure if this is high or not. It probably isn't.
