Waking up with headaches... becoming a problem.

For a few years I have, on occasion, woken up with the worst kind of screaming headache imaginable. It feels like the plates of my skull are sliding down the back of my neck. It also hurts to move my neck at all. It's become more frequent over the last year and is having a detrimental impact on what I can do during the day - painkillers don't always shift it and, at the weekend, I end up just sitting on the sofa for the first few hours of the day trying not to move. I get a headache if I get out of bed too quickly as well. Not always but I can tell when sudden movements will cause stabbing pain in my head that seems to pulse.

Fortunately (!) I'm unemployed at the moment because I couldn't get up until 12pm today. Every time I woke up I had the screaming type of headache (lying down) so rolled over to sleep it off and eventually accepted at 12pm that wasn't going to happen and I was wasting a day. I can't afford to waste half a day when I have so much to be doing. It makes me very reluctant to get out of bed because I know when I stand up it's going to get worse.

Does anyone know what might cause this please? I sleep on two pillows because I have problems breathing if my head isn't elevated and I'm wondering if that could be the cause? We have a memory foam mattress as well, although I sleep better with it than before we bought it. I will try sleeping on one pillow for a few days and see if that helps but is there anything else I need to consider?

My husband gets bad headaches that start at night. We've just worked out that it is from teeth grinding.

Have you really not seen a doctor?

I think that should be your first port of call.

Mollified · 17/05/2012 13:34

See a doctor especially if they are getting worse and more frequent
Yes it can be related to sleeping position, also to ventilation in your bedroom, diet, exercise, stress... a lot of history is needed to diagnose type and cause of headaches

CharminglyOdd · 17/05/2012 13:35

I haven't seen a doctor as I've been in there a lot recently (for me anyway) for perfectly valid non-actively sick reasons but I do feel rather like I've used up my quota for the year. I don't want to get some kind of reputation as a time waster so want to explore everything at home first. If I can't fix it by changing my environment then I'll pop in.

Sorry, x-posts with Mollified. I'm not sure I have changed my environment that much but I'll have a think.

headaches have a multitude of causes as this link briefly describes.

AFingerofFudge · 17/05/2012 13:45

my immediate thoughts would be - are you dehydrated, do you drink enough water?
or change the type of pillow you have??
or maybe see an osteopath to see if some cranial osteopathy will sort it??

CharminglyOdd · 17/05/2012 14:08

Thanks, that link was interesting. From the descriptions given it sounds like migraines rather than headaches.

I'm definitely not dehydrated - I ended up having brain scans as a child before some bright spark decided to ask me how much I was drinking. Ever since then I've been very careful about drinking enough.

I think first port of call will be the pillow and if that doesn't work I'll go to the doctor.

It's quite unusual to wake with a headache.
It's more likely to be due to neck problems, i'd second getting a new pillow and maybe sleeping with only one and/or seeing a physio.
If its quite recent have you a carbon monoxide detector? Carbon monoxide can cause horrible headaches.
Brain tumours can cause headaches on awakening, but that tends to be a daily occurrence and most likely it would be getting significantly worse.

sammyleh · 18/05/2012 09:49

I get checked up regularly whenever i have bouts of headaches due to what they've been a symptom of in my family. I lost my mum a few years ago to a brain tumour and waking up with headaches was one of the first signs so i always ensure that I see a doctor whenever this starts. I dont want to scare you but if you feel this is happening frequently then you should see a doctor xx

DOn't rule out dehydration - i had a headache from that that meant i called NHS direct and thought I had a serious injury. If you are really dehydrated it can take an hour or so to feel normal after drinking lots of fluids..If you have problems breathing, you might be breathing open mouthed in night - very dehydrating.

I used to wake with the worst headache in the world. I was also very tired during the day.

It turned out I have respiratory depression. I now have a machine to help me breathe at night.

Sleep apnoea is also a cause of morning headaches.
