DH's bashed his forehead and his eye's swelling, any experience? NOT an emergency.

It's not an emergency, really!

Over the weekend DH was cutting some wood and a bit flew up and split his eyebrow/forehead open about an inch. After I pissed myself laughing (you had to have been there, honestly! GrinBlush) I took him to Minor Injuries and they glued it and gave him the standard 'Head Injuries' spiel. It was a little bit of wood and didn't give him a hefty thump, it was just sharp and hit at an angle.

Anyway, they said it would probably swell, which it has, a bit. But over the week, the swelling has slowly 'leaked' down onto the bit under his eyebrow, and now it's puffy along the bit of his nose by the corner of his eye, and it's creeping down where his 'bags' would be if he had them IYSWIM.

It really does look and feel like there's fluid there. He said that today he's been pressing on the swelling trying to push it upwards and it's made the cut leak a bit of clear fluid, bloody man! I might have told him off a bit. Blush

He says it's always worse in the morning and slowly goes down a bit during the day (I don't see him in the mornings).

Wondering if an ice pack would be worth it, or is it just something that will go away over time? I'm going to have to tie his feckin' hands down to stop him messing with it!

I'd be tempted to take him to an eye hospital or opthamologist (sp?) to get his eye looked at and to check there is no damage to the eye itself caused by the fluid. I'm not a medical person but I would always err on the side of caution WRT injuries near/on eyes.

Really? Confused We both thought it would be ok as the doctor said to 'expect swelling' and there's no bruising at all. The swelling isn't in the eye socket at all, it's on the bone around it.

Maybe I need to ring the doctor in the morning to check. Problem is, DH won't go to the doctor unless he HAS to, and he won't think he needs to...

I would give it a bit of time to let the swelling go down - DD had this when she fell off the windowsill - big bump on forehead which slowly morphed into black/swollen eye - went down after about a week or so - with no ill effects.

Presumably there's nothing in the cut causing the swelling as they'd have checked at the docs.

Yes I've packs to reduce swelling.

How is it today?

*ice

There isn't a great deal you can do to reduce existing swelling other than wait (or elevate which isn't relevant here...) Ice is more to prevent or reduce swelling as it builds up and I don't think it would be of huge benefit now.
