Has anyone had hair analysis done?

Is it a load of mumbo jumbo or are they useful?
I am just waiting for some bloods to come back from the GP. In the meantime I thought I might try and help myself.
Dr is referring me to Chronic Fatigue team and has tested for everything under the sun. Just waiting for Coeliacs to come back. But I have Shingles at the moment and am so fed up of being ill.

Google it first. There are lots of sites explaining why it's just quackry. Sorry. I do hope you feel better soon- but hair analysis won't help.

alfiemama · 16/05/2012 11:27

Thanks Seeker. I have googled but only looked at the Companies that promote it.

My DH's father used to do this for "patients"Hmm as part of his practising of a thing called Radionics. Supposedly, he could diagnose people on the other side of the world by analysing a hair sample and then he could treat them with his little magic box, which manipulated energy fields in some way and sent healing out to people wherever they were.

It is the biggest load of rubbish that I have ever encountered. He thought that he could cure my pre-eclampsia, the boys autism, bed wetting, migraines (he had a patient who lived, literally, on the other side of the world for this one). He diagnosed my husband, who was under section in a psych ward, with selenium poisoning...

Please, please steer well clear of this quackery. it is absolute garbage and won't help you at all. There is no standardised methodology or reading of results, no indication of any kind that it is actually of any use at all and it can lead to people ignoring potentially serious medical problems.

The only proper use of hair analysis is forensic, where actual science is used. The other stuff is just mumbo jumbo.

I'm sorry that you don't feel well. I have ME so I now how awful chronic fatigue and all the accompanying symptoms can be, but hair analysis will not help you. Stick with your GP and, perhaps, look at your diet. Try cutting out caffeine and alcohol, eating more fruit and veg, getting some sunshine whenever possible, reducing white carbs and just trying to live within your limits. That'll help more than all the spooky guff under the sun.

Thanks Stressed for sharing your experience. Looks like I will be steering clear of this. Grin I suppose the same would go for the allergy tests in Health shops then also? I'm sorry about your ME have you had much success then with changing your diet? I have just gone gluten free this week to see if this help.
When another Dr diagnosed the shingles, I asked if bloods had come back he said they are okay apart from my red blood cells which are raised and asked me about alcohol (jeez I felt like an alcoholic) I have the occasional drink each week but I wouldn't call it excessive. He then said should be okay Hmm and has now put fear of god in me and said he will get my Dr to ring me. . . I'm still waiting.

Alfie, I haven't changed my diet a great deal but I was veggie, anyway, so didn't have to cut back on meat or anything like that. I have cut out caffiene, things like white bread (but not wholemeal cards or brown rice), I make sure that I drag my butt outside for a wee while every time the sun is shining to keep up the vitD. I can't drink alcohol, anyway, because, since I've been ill, it affects me really badly.

The best thing to do is just not to over do things and to try and accept your limits. It's a lot harder than it sounds, though. I also get regular VitB12 injections, a vitD supplement and have a pile of different meds to take every day, so I actually don't feel nearly as bad as I did a year ago. I just have to be very careful, eat small amounts of nutritious stuff, regularly, try not to eat junk, and rest as much as I can, when I can.

To be honest, I have just had to learn to live with it.

alfiemama · 16/05/2012 12:51

Thanks stressed sounds like you are dealing with it well. I'm just stupid at times. I try something (like diet) and find it helps me but then slip back into my old ways and wonder why I am then in pain.
I tell everyone right that's it no more alcohol and then they encourage me to drink. One wont hurt you blah blah or a bit of bread is okay for you.
I think like you said I just have to accept my limits. It's so frustrating though.

Hi Alfie, I have had this done, and it is a load of crap. They basically sent me pdf of stuff i already knew, like what foods and vitamins are good for my condition, and what foods i should be avoiding. All of this stuff i studied on google anyway. They also listed a whole page on chemicals i should be avoiding, i wish i had kept the email but i deleted it. At the end of the page, the company listed two sorts of vitamins that i should be taking, and that these particular vitamins would cleanse my inside, anyway the vitamins were sold by the company only. They also included a free phone consultation with the hair analysis. The lady that phoned me did not have a clue about my condition, all she kept going on was about the vitamin tablets and how they would cleanse my body. anyway i was not happy with it, so asked for a refund.

alfiemama · 16/05/2012 16:36

Thanks Strawberry, Crikey yes sounds like a total con. It's scary that they can get away with in this day and age. I will be keeping a wide birth.
Does anyone know of any tablets/alternative medicine that would be good for aiding the immune system?

Yes it is very useful. I was burnt out after having 3 kids and apparently my blood were fine but a hair test showed me my imbalances and stress patterns - the supplements and detox procedures have helped me get back on my feet from not even being able to walk across a room. I have been detoxing copper which had accumulated and affected my thyroid and adrenals (from stress etc) and I was already in nutrition and health and have added the hair test to my arsenal.
