ds1 (10) has just had his weekly swimming lesson. They are usually in the little learner pool ( level 4) but from time to time they have a go in the big pool.
Last time he swam 4 lengths, this time he could barely manage 1, he got out looking absolutely knackered and puffed out. The teacher told him to wait a minute and try again, he was suposed to be aiming for 200 metres but he barely got half a length and stopped, crying, saying he was just too tired and although he was swimming his best he was getting nowhere. He got out seeming really out of breath and looked awful.
He doesn't have asthma as iknow of but he isn't a very active child and doesn't really do a lot of running about.
I have not seen him like that before though.

i can't swim myself so not sure really how out of breath making it is but all the other kids looked fine
i'm worried

No idea but am bumping for you.

Is he coming down with something?

poppiesinaline · 16/02/2006 20:25

Has he had a particularly busy week? Or lots of late nights? Maybe he is just tired out.

Posey · 16/02/2006 20:27

There are loads of bugs around just now. Maybe he's coming down with something. See how he is after a nights sleep.

I imagine he is coming down with something, some of these bugs take all your energy first before you even realise you are ill.

I had athsma as a young child and wasn't bothered for it for years untill I was at swimming one day. Don't know if it is the mixture of chlorine and excercise. I also get a bit paniced when I have my face under water, so could be to do with that. If it were athsma you probably should be able to hear him wheeze?

festiveface · 16/02/2006 21:06

no, no noticable wheezing

Do you think that he just didn't want to do it? Just noticed your other thread. He seems in quite a fragile state of mind. Maybe he's going down with something.

festiveface · 16/02/2006 21:15

i know, but he looked like he was nearly killing himself to do it but was just too out of breath and knackered. i think it upset him that he couldn't do what was expected, he's that sort of child.
i hope he isn't coming down with something although for all his 10 years he has hardly EVER been ill and just recently it's been colds and virus's galore.
i am suffering anxiety myself related to an irrational fear of illnesses so i really hope not.
ds2 as been complaining of feeling sick tonight too...aaaaaaaaaaaargh

If he seems to be ok now, ie good colour, no breathing problems and managing to do his usual things, then I wouldn't worry. Maybe he was having an 'off' day.
