piles keep flaring up, really down :(

i know this will sound irrational, but i had my first proper case of piles about 5 months ago. it never really went away (one prolapsed, who knows what else inside!) but did calm down, but am having another 'episode'. i know i can use all the creams, suppositories etc, but my problem is the effect they seem to have on me. i'm paranoid about eating enough fibre & constantly aware of whether there's any symptoms when i go to the loo.

i know lots of people have far worse problems, i don't know what it is about them that gets to me, but its really affected my quality of life over the last few months even though the symptoms haven't been bad at all between episodes.

has anyone had banding/injections/surgery? i feel like i need to find a way to get rid of them for good.

Hi lolalois. I had bad piles many years ago. Too bad for injections or banding so I had surgery. Problem solved. I personally didn't find the operation a big deal - far better than suffering from severe piles - though the first bowel movement was somewhat eye watering Grin. So, if you do go down the surgery route I would personally recommend that you take the maximum dose of laxatives that they offer you - and then some!

thanks so much, you hear so many bad things about surgery, bit off putting, but then so is the current situation.....
did you have normal or that new 'THD/HALO' type surgery?
did they not come back?
its sounding more appealing by the minute.....

Have you tried the creams? I couldn't figure out if you have or not. Fibre makes me worse. Drink plenty of water.

DH needed banding after his burst, he lost a ton of blood, he cancelled the op and the nurse I spoke to said she didn't blame him!

Are you embaressed by them? They are very common.

lolalois · 15/05/2012 17:54

yes, have tried creams, suppositories and they do calm it down for a bit but the one on the outside never went fully back in.

i don't suffer from constipation, never have, so not sure whats causing them. am very embarrased, yes, its seems to be one of those things that noone ever talks about.

i don't think my case is that severe, but they just seem to affect me badly, i feel really down about them, just want my body back to normal i guess.

You can actually push them back in...

I don't think it would be worth your while having an op, it seems a bit extreme.

Go to your Dr and ask about banding Smile it worked really well for DH.

lolalois · 15/05/2012 18:05

can't face the pushing it back in. but might ask about banding. i know, in more rational moments i think surgery is extreme, they'd probably laugh me out of the operating theatre!

just hate the hassle of them. for some reason they really preoccupy me.

Hi again lola. My op was in the early 1980s so it would have been the conventional op - about seven days in hospital I think. Obviously I had tried the non surgical routes first and including the pushing back thing. But they were really bad - the legacy of a traumatic first birth years before.

Surgery is the last resort of course for anything but I was so glad I had it done and no they never came back even 30 years on. Mind you, you have to really careful not to get constipated otherwise you can get new ones - so plenty of fibre!

lolalois · 16/05/2012 20:10

Wow, it's good that they never came back. I agree, surgery is a last resort, hopefully there are other options like the banding.

To be honest I've had a bit of an odd development today, went to the GP who said I haven't got piles at all, it was an anal fissure thats healed, leaving a skin tag, not a prolapsed pile. She thinks my current symptoms are more to do with my coccyx than piles. All pretty weird as 2 previous dr's have looked & said it was a hemorrhoid.

I'm very confused! but fingers crossed whatever it is it'll calm down soon....
